Its key focus areas include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developing and promoting climate-resilient, high-protein pulse varieties,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enhancing productivity and expanding the area under pulses,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving post-harvest storage and management, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensuring fair and remunerative prices for farmers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2030-31, the mission targets:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 45% rise in production \u2014 from 242 lakh metric tonnes in 2023-24 to 350 lakh metric tonnes;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 13% expansion in area (from 275 to 310 lakh hectares) and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 28% boost in yield (from 881 kg\/ha to 1,130 kg\/ha).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Current Status of Pulses Cultivation and Production in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During 2023-24, pulses were cultivated over 275 lakh hectares across India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rajasthan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had the largest share with 54.67 lakh hectares, followed by <\/span><b>Madhya Pradesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (51 lakh ha), <\/span><b>Maharashtra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (44 lakh ha), and <\/span><b>Uttar Pradesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (30 lakh ha).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>In terms of production<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Madhya Pradesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led with 59.74 lakh metric tonnes, followed by <\/span><b>Maharashtra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (40 lakh MT), Rajasthan (33 lakh MT), and <\/span><b>Uttar Pradesh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (31 lakh MT), together contributing a major share of the total 242 lakh metric tonnes produced nationwide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly half of the total cultivated area and over 60% of production occur during the rabi season.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among crops, <\/span><b>gram (chana) dominates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both in area and output, mainly grown in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Moong ranks second<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, largely cultivated in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, followed by tur (arhar) grown in Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Urad <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is mainly produced in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, while <\/span><b>masoor (lentil)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is concentrated in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Significance of the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India is both the world\u2019s <\/span><b>largest producer and consumer of pulses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, yet domestic output falls short of demand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, India is forced to rely on imports from Myanmar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Australia, and Canada \u2014 a trend that has grown in recent years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to NITI Aayog\u2019s report, <\/span><b>India\u2019s pulses demand is projected to reach 268 lakh metric tonnes by 2030 and 293 lakh metric tonnes by 2047<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To bridge this gap, boosting domestic production is essential.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, <\/span><b>India\u2019s average yield (881 kg\/hectare) lags far behind Canada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2,200 kg\/ha) <\/span><b>and China<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1,815 kg\/ha).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission, therefore, seeks to raise productivity to 1,130 kg\/hectare, making India self-reliant in pulses and reducing import dependence.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Focus on Tur, Urad, and Masoor in the Pulses Mission<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses prioritises tur (arhar), urad, and masoor (lentil) as these <\/span><b>three crops together account for about 34% of India\u2019s total pulses area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and make a major contribution to national production.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a large yield gap persists in these crops, which the mission aims to close through targeted interventions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of the proposed 35 lakh hectare expansion, about 9 lakh hectares will be added for tur, mainly in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Jharkhand, along with new cultivation in the Northeast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urad cultivation will expand by using rice fallow lands in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, while masoor will be promoted in rice fallows of West Bengal, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How the New Pulses Mission Differs from the Earlier NFSNM Scheme<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses replaces and expands upon the pulses component of the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM), introducing broader interventions and stronger farmer support.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the new framework, <\/span><b>assistance for Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) has been increased<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to \u20b910,000 per hectare, up from \u20b99,000 earlier, to promote advanced agricultural technologies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key change is the <\/span><b>provision for 100% procurement of tur, urad, and masoor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by NAFED and NCCF under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) of PM-AASHA for the next four years.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PM-AASHA, which stands for\u00a0<\/span><b>Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is an integrated scheme by the Indian government to ensure farmers receive remunerative prices for their produce and to make essential commodities affordable for consumers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Procurement will be done directly from registered farmers through formal agreements, verified using Aadhaar-based biometric or facial authentication. Procurement of other pulses will continue as per regular PSS norms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Implementation Strategy of the Pulses Mission<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses will adopt a cluster-based approach to strengthen the entire agriculture value chain \u2014 from inputs to markets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each cluster will cover a minimum of 10 hectares (or 2 hectares in hilly and northeastern regions).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These clusters and districts will be chosen from potential pulses-growing areas across India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selection will follow NITI Aayog\u2019s classification of districts \u2014<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High Area\u2013High Yield (HA\u2013HY)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High Area\u2013Low Yield (HA\u2013LY)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low Area\u2013High Yield (LA\u2013HY)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low Area\u2013Low Yield (LA\u2013LY)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Priority will also be given to:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rice fallow, rainfed, and watershed areas,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Districts under PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirational, border, and Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected districts,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Areas under Adarsh Gram Yojana,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regions in the Northeast, Himalayan states, islands, and other backward areas,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span
