{"id":7111,"date":"2023-04-03T06:25:21","date_gmt":"2023-04-03T00:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=7111"},"modified":"2025-03-28T17:21:34","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T11:51:34","slug":"reusable-launch-vehicle-technology-demonstration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/reusable-launch-vehicle-technology-demonstration\/","title":{"rendered":"Reusable Launch Vehicle-Technology Demonstration"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>An Indian Air Forces (IAF) <strong>Chinook helicopter<\/strong> was used to drop the RLV-TD from a 4.5 km altitude and ISRO executed the landing experiment of the RLV-TD as planned.<\/li>\n<li>The release of this vehicle was autonomous as it performed approach and landing manoeuvres using <strong>Integrated Navigation<\/strong>, <strong>Guidance<\/strong>, and control system and completed an <strong>autonomous<\/strong> <strong>landing on the airstrip<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>first in the world<\/strong>; <strong>a winged body<\/strong> has been carried to an altitude of 4.5 km.<\/li>\n<li>It is the second in the series of experimental flights of the programme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key facts about Reusable Launch Vehicle-Technology Demonstration<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>This programme is planned as a series of technology demonstration missions that have been considered as a first step towards realising a Two Stage To Orbit (TSTO) fully reusable vehicle.<\/li>\n<li>A Winged RLV-TD has been configured to act as a flying test bed to evaluate various technologies namely, <strong>hypersonic flight, autonomous landing, and powered cruise flight.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These technologies will be developed in phases through a series of experimental flights.<\/li>\n<li>RLV-TD is similar to that of an aircraft and <strong>combines<\/strong> the complexity of <strong>both launch vehicles and aircraft.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Features of RLV-TD<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It consists of a <strong>fuselage<\/strong> (body), a nose cap, double delta wings, and twin vertical tails.<\/li>\n<li>It also features symmetrically placed <strong>active control surfaces called Elevons and Rudder.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are the previous launches?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>RLV-TD was successfully flight tested on May 23, 2016, from Sriharikota validating the critical technologies such as autonomous navigation, guidance and control, reusable thermal protection system, and re-entry mission management.<\/li>\n<li>During this mission, the vehicle landed on a <strong>hypothetical runway over the Bay of Bengal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a cruise missile?<\/h3>\n<p>A cruise missile either locates its target or has a preset target.
