{"id":71337,"date":"2025-10-31T13:45:53","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T08:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=71337"},"modified":"2025-10-31T13:50:33","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T08:20:33","slug":"bordetella-holmesii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bordetella-holmesii\/","title":{"rendered":"Bordetella holmesii"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Bordetella holmesii Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has reported a significant rise in infections caused by a lesser-known bacterium Bordetella holmesii that mimics whooping cough in north India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Bordetella holmesii<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>bacterium<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently recognized in 1995.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>gram-negative coccobacillus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can cause pertussis-like symptoms in humans as well as invasive infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can cause <\/span><b>endocarditis,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> community acquired pneumonia, <\/span><b>cellulitis, suppurative arthritis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and pyelonephritis.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers discovered that nearly 37 per cent of infections in North India were caused by <\/span><b>Bordetella holmesii<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bacterium), surpassing the number of infections from Bordetella pertussis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What is Whooping cough?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also <\/span><b>known as pertussis.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a highly contagious infection which impacts the respiratory tract and is caused by <\/span><b>Bordetella pertussis bacteria.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It gets its name from the \u201cwhooping\u201d sound which the patient experiences while coughing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>particularly severe in infants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and in case of complications may <\/span><b>lead to pneumonia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and even death.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP) vaccines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Transmission of Whooping Cough<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person catches <\/span><b>this bacteria via droplets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when an infected person coughs or sneezes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It attaches itself to the throat lining and then produces toxins which damage hair-like projections which clear debris and mucus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leads to inflammation in the airways and causes severe coughing fits.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Symptoms of Whooping Cough<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It begins with <\/span><b>cold-like symptoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accompanied with low-grade fever.
