Unlike CO\u2082, it is a particle, not a greenhouse gas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>b:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Primary sources include <\/span><b>coal-fired power plants, cookstoves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, diesel engines, and the burning of biomass fuels such as wood, other fossil fuels, forest fires, crop-residue burning, and brick kilns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does not remain confined to its source region.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Impact of Black Carbon<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Human Health:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has <\/span><b>a significant adverse effect on human health and leads to premature mortality.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regional atmospheric heating:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It remains in the atmosphere for only days to weeks, but during that period it strongly absorbs sunlight and can <\/span><b>produce substantial atmospheric heating.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Responsible for glacial melt:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Black carbon particles deposited on snow and ice darken the surface, reduce its albedo, and <\/span><b>cause it to absorb more solar radiation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
