


{"id":71990,"date":"2025-11-04T13:22:49","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T07:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=71990"},"modified":"2025-11-06T10:56:29","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T05:26:29","slug":"amphipods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/amphipods\/","title":{"rendered":"Amphipods"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Amphipods Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two new species of marine amphipods, Grandidierella geetanjalae and Grandidierella khambhatensis, have been found by a team of researchers from Chilika and the Gulf of Khambhat, recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Amphipods<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are a type of <\/span><b>small crustacean.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>related to crabs, lobsters, and shrimp.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can be found in almost <\/span><b>all water environments.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They live in the <\/span><b>ocean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in <\/span><b>fresh water, and even on land.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name \u2018<\/span><b>amphipoda\u2019 means &#8220;different-footed.&#8221;\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is because they<\/span><b> have many different kinds of legs.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Unlike <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some <\/span><b>other crustaceans, their legs are not all the same.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are over <\/span><b>7,000 known species <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of amphipods. Most of them belong to a group called Gammaridea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amphipods <\/span><b>can be very tiny, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about 0.1 centimeters (0.04 inches) long. But <\/span><b>some can grow quite large,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> up to 34 centimeters (13 inches).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Most <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amphipods <\/span><b>eat tiny bits of dead plants and animals. Some are also scavengers,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eating what they find.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><b>live in many places.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 750 species live in <\/span><b>caves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Some <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amphipods <\/span><b>are terrestrial animals, like sandhoppers.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> largest amphipods live deep down on the sea floor. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0They can be found seven kilometers (about 4.3 miles) deep.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>About Grandidierella Geetanjalae and Grandidierella Khambhatensis<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are two new s<\/span><b>pecies of marine amphipods.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Grandidierella geetanjalae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was collected from the <\/span><b>Chilika lagoon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near Rambha in Ganjam district, <\/span><b>Odisha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Grandidierella khambhatensis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was collected from the <\/span><b>Gulf of Khambhat, Gujarat.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both species measure between 5.5 and 6 mm in length.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>detritivorous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, f<\/span><b>eeding primarily on organic matter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and playing an important role in maintaining ecosystem health by contributing to natural cleaning processes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/bhubaneswar\/2-species-of-marine-amphipods-found-by-berhampur-university-gujarat-researchers\/amp_articleshow\/125061138.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TOI<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amphipods are a type of small crustacean.
