{"id":7235,"date":"2022-11-27T08:53:06","date_gmt":"2022-11-27T03:23:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=7235"},"modified":"2025-03-28T19:01:19","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T13:31:19","slug":"small-modular-reactors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/small-modular-reactors\/","title":{"rendered":"Small Modular Reactors"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>What are Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>SMRs are\u00a0<strong>advanced nuclear reactors<\/strong>\u00a0that have a\u00a0<strong>power capacity of up to 300 MW(e)<\/strong>\u00a0per unit, which is about one-third of the generating capacity of traditional nuclear power reactors.\u00a0SMRs, which can produce a large amount of low-carbon electricity, are:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Small<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 physically a fraction of the size of a conventional nuclear power reactor.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modular<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 making it possible for systems and components to be factory-assembled and transported as a unit to a location for installation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reactors<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 harnessing nuclear fission to generate heat to produce energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Advantages of SMRs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>SMR, with up to 300 MW capacity by nature are\u00a0<strong>flexible in design and require smaller footprint.\u00a0<\/strong>Given their smaller footprint, SMRs can be sited on locations not suitable for larger nuclear power plants.<\/li>\n<li>Being mobile and agile technology,\u00a0<strong>SMR can be factory-built unlike the conventional nuclear reactors\u00a0<\/strong>that are built on\u2013site. Thus, SMRs offers significant savings in cost and construction time.<\/li>\n<li>SMR is a\u00a0<strong>promising technology in industrial de-carbonization<\/strong>\u00a0especially where there is a requirement of reliable and continuous supply of power.
