Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a very <\/span><b>rare genetic disorder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><b>affects the brain and nervous system.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batten disease is a <\/span><b>congenital, progressive, and terminal neurological disease.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Symptoms sometimes begin in infancy and sometimes later in childhood, after apparently normal early development.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Occasionally <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it may <\/span><b>start in adulthood.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In individuals suffering from Batten disease, <\/span><b>nervous system function steadily declines, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causing a wide variety of <\/span><b>neurologic problems,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including <\/span><b>loss of vision and seizures.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>life expectancy of a child<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> born with Batten disease can <\/span><b>vary, depending on the form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the disease and the <\/span><b>age of onset.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Some children die in early childhood, while others may be able to live into their teens <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or twenties.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>What Causes Batten Disease?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batten disease is actually a<\/span><b> family of related disorders also known as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be caused by <\/span><b>genetic mutations in any of more than a dozen known genes, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collectively referred to as<\/span><b> CLN genes (CLN1, CLN2, etc).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 13 known forms of Batten disease (CLN1 through CLN14).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each form is classified by the specific version of the CLN (ceroid lipofuscinosis, neuronal) gene that causes it, with each numbered subtype referring to a different gene that causes its own respective form of the disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>most common type of Batten disease is CLN3.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Batten Disease <\/b><b>Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most forms of Batten disease cause<\/span><b> vision loss, seizures, delayed developmental milestones, behavioral and learning problems,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> loss of language and motor skills.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some children with infantile Batten disease also develop <\/span><b>microcephaly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Vision loss is often the first symptom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can rapidly progress.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents also often notice <\/span><b>clumsiness and stumbling in older children due to a loss of motor coordination.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Eventually<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, children with Batten disease become <\/span><b>blind, unable to walk, talk, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><b>swallow, and confined to a wheelchair or bed.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Batten Disease <\/b><b>Treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there is <\/span><b>no treatment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to reverse the effects of Batten disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But some <\/span><b>medications <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><b>help improve symptoms like seizure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span
