mysterious and powerful phenomenon that <\/span><b>occurs during volcanic eruptions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than thunderstorms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is in the form of a <\/span><b>powerful barrage of lightning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which occurs at the <\/span><b>early stages of a volcanic eruption.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cause: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main cause is the <\/span><b>collision between ash particles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the <\/span><b>volcanic plume.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The collision and rubbing of these particles together lead to the generation of static electricity, which, in turn, builds up charges and creates <\/span><b>flashes of lightning.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of lightning can be<\/span><b> found in two places<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the dense ash clouds located <\/span><b>closer to the ground.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Higher up<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the eruption plume where <\/span><b>ice particles form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (from water vapourised from the magma) and collide, building electric charges and creating lightning visible strikes at higher levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The water content found in volcanic plumes is higher than that in thunderstorms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Previous Volcanic Lightning<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The earliest was made by <\/span><b>Pliny the Younger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who described it during <\/span><b>Mount Vesuvius<\/b><span
