{"id":72925,"date":"2025-11-11T12:47:25","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T07:17:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=72925"},"modified":"2025-11-11T17:15:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T11:45:15","slug":"rift-valley-fever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rift-valley-fever\/","title":{"rendered":"Rift Valley Fever"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Rift Valley Fever Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) affecting Mauritania and Senegal in Western Africa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Rift Valley Fever<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by a<\/span><b> Phlebovirus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> belonging to the <\/span><b>Phenuiviridae family<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It primarily <\/span><b>affects animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as sheep, goats, cattle, and camels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans become infected through <\/span><b>close contact with infected animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or by the bite of infected mosquitoes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virus <\/span><b>has not been<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shown to <\/span><b>spread from person to person.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transmission:<\/b> <b>Multiple mosquito species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can transmit the Rift Valley fever virus, and the predominant vector differs from one region to another.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Origin and History of Rift Valley Fever<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It derives its name from <\/span><b>Kenya\u2019s Rift Valley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the disease was first recognised in the early 1930s.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, the infection has <\/span><b>appeared across sub-Saharan Africa.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1977, it spread northwards to Egypt, and by 2000, it had crossed the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/red-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\">Red Sea<\/a> into Saudi Arabia and Yemen,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> marking its first confirmed appearance outside the African continent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of Rift Valley Fever<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In about 90 % of cases, RVF presents as a <\/span><b>mild, flu-like illness <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that begins two to six days after infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The onset is marked by <\/span><b>high fever, muscle and joint pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, headache, weakness, and backache, sometimes accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a small proportion of patients, disease progresses to a severe form affecting <\/span><b>the eyes, brain, or liver.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment.
