Narasimha recently said many of the environmental law principles imported from Western countries, such as \u2018inter-generational equity\u2019, are anthropocentric and would hardly be of any assistance to protect an endangered species from extinction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Intergenerational Equity<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intergenerational equity is a principle that emphasizes the <\/span><b>moral obligation of the current generation to ensure that future generations have the same opportunities and resources available to them as the present generation.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It refers to<\/span><b> equity between generations,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which includes the <\/span><b>needs of the future generation in the design and implementation of current policies.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, intergenerational equity simply means a <\/span><b>duty of the present generation towards future generations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> i.e. the present generations of h<\/span><b>uman beings are obliged to take care of the natural resources and ecology <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so that all future generations shall also have an equal chance to enjoy mother nature and the right to life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>recognized principle of International Environmental law <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which provides for the preservation of natural resources for the benefit of future generations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The principle is <\/span><b>strongly embedded in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/united-nations-framework-convention-on-climate-change-unfccc\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change<\/a>.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, it <\/span><b>owes its recognition to the Brundtland Report, Our Common Future (1987),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which <\/span><b>popularized the principle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of \u201c<\/span><b>development that meets the needs of the present without compromising t<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he ability of <\/span><b>future generations <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to meet their own needs.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\">The<b style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> Declaration of Rio on Environment and Development (1992) adds a rights-based perspective to the principle, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggesting that \u201cthe right to development must be fulfilled to equitably meet development and environmental needs of present and future generations.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/imported-ideas-like-inter-generational-equity-are-anthropocentric-may-not-protect-endangered-species-justice-narasimha\/article70268280.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intergenerational Equity is a recognized principle of International Environmental law which provides for the preservation of natural resources for the benefit of future generations.
