{"id":7355,"date":"2022-11-26T05:23:19","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T23:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=7355"},"modified":"2025-03-28T20:11:35","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T14:41:35","slug":"gram-negative-bacteria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gram-negative-bacteria\/","title":{"rendered":"Gram-negative bacteria"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Recently, a multi-centre survey carried out by the ICMR to spot the trend in antibiotic resistance across the country showed\u00a0<strong>Acinetobacter baumannii,<\/strong>\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>gram-negative bacteria<\/strong>\u00a0known to cause infection in the blood, urinary tract and lungs among others, was resistant to high-end antibiotics.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Antimicrobial Resistance<\/strong>: It occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The survey found\u00a0<strong>5% samples of Acinetobacter baumannii tested in 2021 were resistant to carbapenems<\/strong>, a high-end antibiotic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>What is Gram-negative bacteria?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Gram-negative bacteria are\u00a0<strong>classified by the color they turn after a chemical process called Gram staining<\/strong>\u00a0is used on them.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gram-negative bacteria<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>stain red<\/strong>\u00a0when this process is used.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gram-positive bacteria stain blue.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Gram-negative bacteria are\u00a0<strong>enclosed in a protective capsule<\/strong>. This capsule helps\u00a0<strong>prevent white blood cells (which fight infection) from ingesting the bacteria.<\/strong>\u00a0Under the capsule, gram-negative bacteria have an outer membrane that protects them against certain antibiotics, such as penicillin.<\/li>\n<li>When disrupted, this membrane releases toxic substances called\u00a0<strong>endotoxins<\/strong>.
