


{"id":73835,"date":"2026-06-06T11:11:01","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T05:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=73835"},"modified":"2026-06-06T13:00:59","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T07:30:59","slug":"foraminifera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/foraminifera\/","title":{"rendered":"Foraminifera"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Foraminifera Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, scientists at Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune have discovered a new species of Foraminifera and named it Portatrochammina bharatensis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Foraminifera<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>group of single-celled organisms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have <\/span><b>inhabited the world\u2019s oceans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for over 500 million years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shells have <\/span><b>hundreds of tiny holes called foramen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Latin word for window.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are among the most abundant and ecologically important organisms in the ocean.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Features of Foraminifera<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Size:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They are generally sand-grain size, measuring <\/span><b>between 500 and 50 \u00b5m<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Habitat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They live in the open <\/span><b>ocean, along the coasts, and in estuaries.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most <\/span><b>have shells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for protection and either float in the water column (planktonic) or live on the sea floor (benthic).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>They construct their intricate shells<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, called \u201ctests,\u201d from materials they scavenge from their surroundings (agglutinating mineral grains).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of foraminifera\u201d \u2018<\/span><b>crawl around\u2019 using their pseudopodia.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><b>don\u2019t have a wall around their cell membranes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are extremely flexible and can change shape.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organism pushes extensions of its cytoplasm called pseudopodia (or false feet) through these holes to gather food.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diet:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Foraminifera <\/span><b>eat detritus on the sea floor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and anything smaller than them: diatoms, bacteria, algae, and even small animals such as tiny copepods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>They build complex shells,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consisting at their simplest of one chamber (like a vase or tube) to many chambers that coil in elaborate ways.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/researchmatters.in\/news\/scientists-discover-new-microscopic-foraminifera-along-maharashtras-konkan-coast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">RM<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Foraminifera are single-celled organisms that live in the open ocean, along the coasts, and in estuaries.
