{"id":7387,"date":"2023-04-05T11:19:31","date_gmt":"2023-04-05T05:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=7387"},"modified":"2025-03-28T20:24:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T14:54:48","slug":"what-is-sodium-cyanide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-sodium-cyanide\/","title":{"rendered":"What is  Sodium Cyanide?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in news?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>An application has been filed by Hindusthan Chemical Company and United Phosphorous Ltd for the probe and the imposition of appropriate anti-dumping duty on imports from these nations.<\/li>\n<li>The Union commerce ministry\u2019s investigation arm <strong>Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR)<\/strong> is probing the alleged dumping of the cyanide originating in or exported from China, the European Union, Japan and Korea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key facts about Sodium cyanide<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sodium cyanide appears as a <strong>white crystalline solid, lump solid or powder.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It contains equal numbers of sodium cations and cyanide anions.<\/li>\n<li>It is used as an insecticide, a test reagent for the function <strong>of chemoreceptors<\/strong>, and in many industrial processes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is also used for the <strong>extraction of gold and silver from<\/strong> their respective <strong>ores,<\/strong> dyes, pigments, and bulk drugs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What Is an Anti-Dumping Duty?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>An anti-dumping duty is a <strong>protectionist tariff<\/strong> that a domestic government imposes on <strong>foreign imports<\/strong> that it believes are priced below fair market value.<\/li>\n<li>Dumping is a process wherein a <strong>company exports a product<\/strong> at a price that is significantly lower than the price it normally charges in its home (or its domestic) market.<\/li>\n<li>It is recommended by <strong>the Directorate General of Trade Remedies<\/strong> (DGTR) and the <strong>Ministry of Finance<\/strong> within three months of its recommendation imposes\/levies such duty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is the countervailing duty?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Countervailing duties or CVDs are <strong>tariffs on imported goods<\/strong> that are imposed to offset subsidies given by the <strong>exporting country&#8217;s government<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is a special measure used to <strong>neutralize the negative effects that subsidies<\/strong> for the production of a good in one country have on that same industry in another country, in which the production of that good is not subsidized.<\/li>\n<li>While the <strong>Department of Commerce recommends<\/strong> the CVD, the Department of Revenue in the <strong>finance ministry acts upon<\/strong> the recommendation within <strong>three months and imposes such duties.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is the difference between countervailing duty (CVD) v\/s Anti-dumping duty (AD)?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>AD is imposed to <strong>prevent low-priced foreign goods from damaging<\/strong> the local market. On the other hand, CVD will apply to foreign products that have enjoyed government subsidies, which eventually leads to very low prices.<\/li>\n<li>While the AD <strong>duty amount depends on the margin of dumping<\/strong>, the CVD amount will completely depend upon the subsidy value of the foreign goods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is Cyanide?<\/h3>\n<p>Cyanide is a rapidly acting, potentially deadly chemical that interferes with the body\u2019s ability to use oxygen.
