{"id":73972,"date":"2026-09-27T13:32:23","date_gmt":"2026-09-27T08:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=73972"},"modified":"2026-09-29T11:24:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T05:54:29","slug":"united-nations-convention-against-cybercrime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/united-nations-convention-against-cybercrime\/","title":{"rendered":"United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Union External Affairs Minister signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, aimed at strengthening global efforts to prevent and combat cybercrime.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>first comprehensive, legally binding global treaty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adopted by consensus by <\/span><b>193 UN member states.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was adopted by member states of the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/united-nations-general-assembly-unga\/\" target=\"_blank\">UN General Assembly (UNGA)<\/a> in December 2024<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to strengthen <\/span><b>global cooperation in combating cybercrime.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>first<\/b> <b>universal legally binding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instrument to strengthen collective defences against cybercrime.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Purpose:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To promote <\/span><b>international cooperation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, strengthen measures to prevent and combat cybercrime, and support <\/span><b>capacity-building, particularly for developing countries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>entered into force last year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after securing the required threshold of 40 member-state signatures. By the end of 2025, <\/span><b>93 countries had signed the convention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has <\/span><b>signed this treaty.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The convention was developed by the <\/span><b>UN Office on Drugs and Crime<\/b> <b>(UNODC).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Provisions of United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>sets legal standards for addressing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offenses such as illegal access, cyber fraud, and online child exploitation, while ensuring human rights and data privacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides States with a range of measures to be undertaken to prevent and combat cybercrime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It facilitates the <\/span><b>sharing of electronic evidence across<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> borders and establishes a 24\/7 cooperation network among States.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It recognises the <\/span><b>non-consensual dissemination of intimate images<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an offence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It covers crimes <\/span><b>such as hacking, ransomware, online financial fraud<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, illegal interception, money laundering,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It applies <\/span><b>not only to cyber offences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but also to the <\/span><b>collection and sharing of electronic evidence in serious crimes.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ddnews.gov.in\/en\/eam-jaishankar-signs-un-convention-against-cybercrime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DD News<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UN Convention Against Cybercrime is the first comprehensive, legally binding global treaty on cybercrime, adopted by 193 UN member states.
