{"id":73972,"date":"2025-11-18T12:32:23","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T07:02:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=73972"},"modified":"2025-11-18T13:38:48","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T08:08:48","slug":"united-nations-convention-against-cybercrime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/united-nations-convention-against-cybercrime\/","title":{"rendered":"United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Supreme Court asked the Centre to take a call on ratifying the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>adopted <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by member states of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in December 2024<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to strengthen global <\/span><b>cooperation in combating cybercrime.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Purpose:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To <\/span><b>promote international cooperation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, strengthen measures to prevent and <\/span><b>combat cybercrime<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and support capacity-building, particularly for developing countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will enter into force <\/span><b>90 days after the 40th State<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deposits its <\/span><b>ratification.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>India has not signed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this treaty yet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the first <\/span><b>universal legally binding <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instrument to strengthen collective defences against cybercrime.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The convention was developed by the <\/span><b>UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Provisions of United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It sets legal standards for addressing offenses such as <\/span><b>illegal access, cyber fraud, and online child exploitation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while ensuring human rights and data privacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides States with a range of measures to be <\/span><b>undertaken to prevent and combat cybercrime.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It facilitates the sharing of <\/span><b>electronic evidence across borders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and establishes a 24\/7 cooperation network among States.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It recognises the <\/span><b>non-consensual dissemination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of intimate images <\/span><b>as an offence.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It covers crimes such as hacking, ransomware, online financial fraud, illegal interception, money laundering,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It applies not only to cyber offences but also to the <\/span><b>collection and sharing of electronic evidence in serious crimes.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/legal-news\/digital-arrest-scams-supreme-court-un-cybercrime-treaty-10370651\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>IE<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime was adopted by member states of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in December 2024 to strengthen global cooperation in combating cybercrime.
