(Taningia danae<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the first species found in the Atlantic Ocean belonging to this genus).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Characteristics of Taningia silasii<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a <\/span><b>length of 45 cm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whereas members of this family can also attain large sizes, with the Atlantic species growing up to 2.3 metres in length and weighing approximately 61.4 kg.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>No Tentacles: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most striking features of the Indian octopus squid is the <\/span><b>absence of the long feeding tentacles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typically seen in most squid species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Morphology:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has a <\/span><b>reduced number of gill lamellae,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are tiny leaf-like structures on the gills.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also possesses a uniquely <\/span><b>oval-shaped funnel-mantle locking cartilage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and distinct morphological features in its beak, including a broadened wing on the lower beak.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DNA barcodes revealed <\/span><b>11% genetic divergence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from its only previously confirmed relative, Taningia danae.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/new-deep-sea-squid-species-discovered\/article70308718.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taningia silasii is discovered from the Arabian Sea from nearly 390 metres into the sea off the Kollam coast.
