Against this backdrop, the observance of <\/span><b>November 25<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlights India\u2019s commitment to creating a safer physical and digital environment for women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women Theme<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>The theme for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2025 is \u201cUNiTE to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It highlights the growing threat of online abuse, including cyberstalking, deepfakes, doxxing, and digital harassment. The theme urges governments, tech platforms, and communities to strengthen digital safety, promote accountability, and create secure online spaces for women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women History<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was officially designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 to raise global awareness about gender-based violence. These reforms ensure speedy justice, survivor-friendly procedures, and stricter punishments. The introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 marks a major shift in criminal law, with enhanced penalties and technology-enabled processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>National Commission for Women (NCW)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/national-commission-for-women\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>National Commission for Women<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, established on <\/span><b>31 January 1992<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is the apex statutory body mandated to protect women\u2019s constitutional and legal rights. It monitors safeguards, suggests law reforms, and addresses complaints online and offline. State Commissions for Women perform parallel roles at the local level. NCW also operates helpline <\/span><b>7827170170<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providing 24\u00d77 online support through IVR-based systems for psychological counselling, legal support, and emergency assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective from <\/span><b>1 July 2024<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, BNS replaces the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/indian-penal-code\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Indian Penal Code<\/strong><\/a> (IPC) and introduces stronger provisions for crimes against women. It expands definitions of sexual offences, mandates <\/span><b>audio-video recording<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of victim statements, and ensures that cases involving women and children receive priority in trial proceedings.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life imprisonment for rape of minors under 18.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time-bound trials and improved evidence collection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wider definitions of sexual assault and exploitation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Survivor-friendly procedures including digital recording.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDVA)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PWDVA legally recognises domestic violence in all forms: physical, sexual, emotional, and economic. It defines an <\/span><b>aggrieved person<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as any woman in a domestic relationship and ensures protection orders, residence rights, and compensation. This Act enables women to seek relief even through Protection Officers and service providers, ensuring a comprehensive support ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013 (POSH Act)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The POSH Act provides a robust legal framework to protect women across all workplaces: public, private, organised, and unorganised. It mandates the establishment of Internal Committees (ICs) in workplaces with <\/span><b>more than 10 employees <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Local Committees (LCs) for smaller establishments. It trains women across India in identifying and responding to cyber threats, enhancing their ability to report and safeguard themselves online.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyber safety training<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awareness on digital rights<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reporting mechanisms for cybercrimes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data privacy and protection awareness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Institutional Mechanisms for Fast and Survivor-Friendly Justice<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has invested in specialised institutions to speed up justice delivery and improve survivor experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As of August 2025, <\/span><b>773 FTSCs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><b>400 e-POCSO courts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are functional. These courts have disposed over 3.34 lakh cases relating to rape and POCSO.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Women Help Desks (WHDs):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As of February 2025, <\/span><b>14,658 WHDs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> operate in police stations, facilitating easier reporting and improving sensitivity in investigations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> SHe-Box Portal: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A unified digital platform that routes workplace harassment complaints to relevant Internal\/Local Committees.
