Conducted during the <\/span><b>Sri Lankan Civil War (1983\u20132009)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it marked <\/span><b>India&#8217;s first major international peacekeeping deployment after Independence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The operation aimed to restore peace, enforce the disarmament of militant groups, and help implement the provisions of the peace accord.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Operation Pawan Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Operation Pawan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerged from the growing ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka and India&#8217;s efforts to restore peace through the <\/span><b>1987 Indo-Sri Lanka Accord<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sri Lankan Civil War (1983\u20132009)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was fought between the <\/span><b>Sri Lankan government<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conflict stemmed from long-standing ethnic tensions between the <\/span><b>Sinhalese majority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Tamil minority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To end the violence, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/prime-minister\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Prime Minister<\/b><\/a><b> Rajiv Gandhi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of India and <\/span><b>President J. R. Jayewardene<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Sri Lanka signed the <\/span><b>Indo-Sri Lanka Accord<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><b>29 July 1987<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the Accord, India deployed the <\/span><b>Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to oversee the surrender of weapons by militant groups and support peace implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LTTE later refused to disarm and resumed armed resistance against the IPKF.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This led to the launch of <\/span><b>Operation Pawan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a military campaign to remove LTTE control from the <\/span><b>Jaffna Peninsula<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and restore order.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Operation Pawan Objectives<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The primary objectives of Operation Pawan included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminate LTTE control over the Jaffna Peninsula.<\/span><\/li>\n<li maintaining peace and stability in South Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Operation Pawan Outcome<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Operation Pawan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> achieved several short-term military objectives but faced significant operational and political challenges, making it one of India&#8217;s most complex overseas military missions.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li
