text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was launched by the <\/span><b>Rajiv Gandhi government in 1987<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> sending the Indian <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/un-peacekeeping-mandate-and-principles\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peace Keeping Force<\/a> (IPKF) to Sri Lanka to help quell the civil war between the Tamil and Sinhala communities.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>India&#8217;s first major overseas military campaign post-<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independence<\/span><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was launched<\/span><b> under the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of July 29, 1987.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It involved sending nearly 100,000 Indian troops into Sri Lanka<\/span><b> to disarm the Tamil militant groups,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (<\/span><b>LTTE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and restore peace.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mission soon escalated into intense counter-insurgency combat as the <\/span><b>LTTE turned hostile.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took until October 26, 1987, for <\/span><b>IPKF troops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>capture the city of Jaffna.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the <\/span><b>LTTE melted away into the jungle, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and their <\/span><b>leader V.Prabhakaran eluded capture.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,171 Indian soldiers were martyred, and over 3,500 were injured.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So intense was the conflict that <\/span><b>many bodies of personnel could not be recovered.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most <\/span><b>notable martyrs of Operation Pawan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was <\/span><b>Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran, a Param Vir Chakra recipient, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who was killed on 25 November, 1987.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Operation Pawan\u2019<\/span><b> formally ended <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on <\/span><b>24 March 1990 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the <\/span><b>withdrawal of the IPKF.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><b>Sri Lanka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has <\/span><b>constructed a memorial <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledging the IPKF\u2019s role, the operation <\/span><b>did not receive formal commemoration at the National War Memorial <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Rashtriya Samar Smarak) in New Delhi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
