


{"id":75320,"date":"2025-11-27T15:30:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T10:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=75320"},"modified":"2025-11-27T17:16:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T11:46:15","slug":"mekedatu-dam-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mekedatu-dam-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Mekedatu Dam Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Mekedatu Dam Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Karnataka government decided that it would submit a \u201crevised\u201d Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Centre on the Mekedatu balancing reservoir across the interstate river Cauvery. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Mekedatu Dam Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>multi-purpose (drinking water and power) project <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involving the construction of a <\/span><b>balancing reservoir <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">near Kanakapura in the Ramanagara district, <\/span><b>Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is about <\/span><b>90 km away from Bengaluru<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> 4 km ahead of the border with Tamil Nadu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is proposed at the <\/span><b>confluence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/kaveri-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cauvery River<\/a> with its tributary Arkavathi.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plan involves building a 99-metre-high, 735-metre-long <\/span><b>concrete gravity dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><b>underground powerhouse,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a water conductor system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the dam will have a capacity of holding about 66 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) of water, it would<\/span><b> generate 400 MW of hydroelectricity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once operational.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once completed, it is <\/span><b>expected to supply<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over 4 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of <\/span><b>water to Bengaluru city for drinking purposes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Issue:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Tamil Nadu, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>lower riparian state,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been <\/span><b>opposing the project, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raising apprehensions that the state would be affected if the project takes shape.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamil Nadu says, Mekedatu area represents the last free point in Karnataka from where Cauvery water flows unrestricted into Tamil Nadu, and the Mekedatu dam project is an attempt by Karnataka to block this free flow of water.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/karnataka\/what-is-the-mekedatu-dam-project-dispute-explained\/article70312196.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mekedatu Dam Project is a multi-purpose (drinking water and power) project involving the construction of a balancing reservoir in the Ramanagara district, Karnataka.
