{"id":75428,"date":"2025-11-28T11:53:45","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T06:23:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=75428"},"modified":"2025-11-28T12:11:03","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T06:41:03","slug":"sirpur-archaeological-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sirpur-archaeological-site\/","title":{"rendered":"Sirpur Archaeological Site"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Sirpur Archaeological Site Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The government is planning to prepare Chhattisgarh\u2019s 5th Century Sirpur archaeological site for UNESCO tag.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sirpur Archaeological Site<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is located in Mahasamund district of <\/span><b>Chhattisgarh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a 5th\u201312th Century archaeological site located on the <\/span><b>banks of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/mahanadi-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mahanadi<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the flourishing capital of <\/span><b>Dakshina Kosala<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the <\/span><b>Panduvanshi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and later <\/span><b>Somavamshi kings.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a multi-religious urban centre first discovered in 1882 by <\/span><b>Alexander Cunningham in 1871.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Features of Sirpur Archaeological Site<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excavations revealed 22 Shiva temples, five Vishnu temples, 10 <\/span><b>Buddhist viharas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and three <\/span><b>Jain viharas.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Notable Structures<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Lakshmana Temple (<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dedicated to Vishnu): It is one of India\u2019s<\/span><b> finest brick temples<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was built around the 7th Century.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Surang Tila complex:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is built on a high terrace and has multiple shrines in the <\/span><b>panchayatana style<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (one main shrine surrounded by four subsidiary ones).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Tivaradeva Mahavihara:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It houses a significant Buddha statue.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a major Buddhist centre with large viharas, meditation halls and excavated stupas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also has a 6th Century market complex, showing Sirpur was both a religious and commercial hub.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/explained-history\/how-govt-plans-to-prep-chhattisgarhs-sirpur-site-for-unesco-tag-10387118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sirpur Archaeological Site is located in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh.
