{"id":7567,"date":"2022-11-08T06:08:52","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T00:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=7567"},"modified":"2025-03-28T21:31:03","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T16:01:03","slug":"air-quality-index-aqi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/air-quality-index-aqi\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Quality Index (AQI)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Air Quality Index (AQI):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Launched by the central government in 2014\u00a0<\/strong>as part of the Swachh Bharat campaign, the AQI was to help simplify the common understanding of pollution.<\/li>\n<li>The AQI transforms complex air quality data of various pollutants into a\u00a0<strong>single number<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>index value), nomenclature and colour.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>The pollutants measured<\/strong>\u00a0include\u00a0<u>PM 10, PM 2.5, Nitrogen Dioxide, Ozone, Carbon, etc.<\/u><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>colour-coded AQI index\u00a0<\/strong>helps the public and the government understand the condition of the air and what subsequent measures are to be taken to combat the situation, based on its severity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Six categories of AQI:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Good\u2019 (0-50)<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Satisfactory\u2019 (50-100)<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Moderately polluted\u2019 (100-200)<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Poor\u2019 (200-300)<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Very Poor\u2019 (300-400)<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Severe\u2019 (400-500)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Calculation of the index:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>There are six or eight pollutants in the affected air and each of these pollutants is given a\u00a0<strong>weight based on a formula<\/strong>. That weight\u00a0<strong>depends on the kind of impact it has on human health.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The worst of these weights is given as composite air quality, so instead of giving six different numbers, and six different colours, it throws up\u00a0<strong>one single colour, one single number to denote the overall impact<\/strong>.
