Union (AASU), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the<\/span><b> All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The signing of the Accord <\/span><b>brought an end to the 6-year-long agitation,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Assam Movement (1979-1985), <\/span><b>aimed at dispelling foreigners <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the state of Assam.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>aim <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the accord was to<\/span><b> detect and deport all immigrants <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the state<\/span><b> who had come to the territory post-24 March 1971.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Main Provisions of Assam Accord<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>determined 1st January 1966 as the cut-off date<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the purpose of <\/span><b>detection and deletion of foreigners.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It allowed for <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/citizenship\/\" target=\"_blank\">citizenship<\/a> for all persons coming to Assam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from \u201cSpecified Territory\u201d <\/span><b>before the cut-off date.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It further specifies that all persons <\/span><b>who came to Assam prior to 1st January 1966 (inclusive) and up to 24th March 1971 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(midnight) <\/span><b>shall be detected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in accordance with the provisions of the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Foreigners (Tribunals) Order, 1939.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>names <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of foreigners <\/span><b>so detected will be deleted from the Electoral Rolls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in force.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such persons will be <\/span><b>required to register themselves before the Registration Officers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the respective districts in accordance with the provisions of the Registration of Foreigners Act, 1939, and the Registration of Foreigners Rules, 1939.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assam Accord <\/span><b>does not call for their deportation, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but they were to <\/span><b>get voting rights only after expiry of 10 years from the date of their detection or declaration as foreigner.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Foreigners who came to Assam<\/b> <b>on or after 25th March 1971 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shall continue to be <\/span><b>detected, deleted, and expelled<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in accordance with law.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Clause 6:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It promises to provide <\/span><b>constitutional, legislative, and administrative safeguards <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><b>protect, preserve, and promote<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the<\/span><b> cultural, social, and linguistic identity,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and heritage of the <\/span><b>Assamese people.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These safeguards aim to address concerns regarding the state\u2019s demographic and cultural integrity amidst the influx of migrants.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/sc-seeks-centre-s-reply-on-petition-citing-violation-of-assam-accord-101764877139179.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Assam Accord was signed on 15th August, 1985, amongst the Union of India, the Govt. of Assam, the All Assam Students&#8217;
