During the 23rd India-Russia Summit, both sides pushed for accelerating the India-EAEU Free Trade Agreement as part of their new 2030 Economic Roadmap.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EAEU is a regional economic union created to promote economic integration among member countries. It ensures free movement of goods, services, capital, and labour, and supports coordinated economic policies for stable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Established: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2015 (via the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Members:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Headquarters:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Moscow, Russia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Aim:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Strengthen economic cooperation, modernize economies, raise competitiveness, and improve living standards.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Also Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/relos-agreement-and-india-russia-relations\/\" target=\"_blank\">RELOS Agreement<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>India-EAEU Free Trade Agreement Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Big Market Access: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FTA will open access to a USD 6.5 trillion Eurasian market, helping India increase exports in pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, textiles, and agriculture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduced Dependence on the West:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India-EAEU trade touched USD 69 billion in 2024, growing 7% from 2023. This helps India diversify away from the US and EU amid rising tariff pressures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stronger Energy Security: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russia already supplies 35-40% of India\u2019s crude oil imports. An FTA can ensure stable and long-term access to oil, gas, coal, and other minerals at competitive prices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lower Costs for Indian Businesses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Removing or reducing tariffs across EAEU countries can make Indian MSME exports cheaper and more competitive, especially in textiles, pharma, and machine parts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Boost to Connectivity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FTA will support major trade routes like the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which can reduce transit time between India and Russia from 40 days to nearly 20 days.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>India-EAEU Free Trade Agreement Challenges<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Complex Tariff Structures:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India and EAEU (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia &amp; Kyrgyzstan) have very different tariff regimes; harmonizing these across 5 countries slows negotiations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sanctions on Russia:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Over <\/span><b>14,000+ Western sanctions on Russia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> complicate payment systems, logistics, and compliance for Indian companies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Trade Imbalance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India\u2019s trade with EAEU is about <\/span><b>$16-17 billion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>over 85% is dominated by Russia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating dependency and imbalance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Connectivity Barriers:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> INSTC and Chabahar routes are still not fully operational; cargo movement takes <\/span><b>35-45 days<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, increasing cost and reducing competitiveness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regulatory &amp; Standards Issues:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> India and EAEU follow different standards for pharma, engineering goods, and food products, requiring alignment before tariff cuts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limited Market Awareness:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Indian exporters have low awareness of EAEU demand patterns;
