News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India will host the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage from 8 to 13 December 2025 in New Delhi.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Intangible cultural heritage (ICH)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as <\/span><b>UNESCO defines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it, includes the p<\/span><b>ractices, knowledge, expressions, objects, and spaces <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><b>communities see as part<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their <\/span><b>cultural identity.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Safeguarding of ICH, <\/span><b>UNESCO adopted the 2003 Convention <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on 17th October 2003 during its 32nd General Conference <\/span><b>in Paris.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Convention formally <\/span><b>established mechanisms for international cooperation,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> support, and recognition, laying the <\/span><b>foundation for UNESCO\u2019s ICH lists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>subsequent work of the Intergovernmental Committee.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>purposes of this Convention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To safeguard the ICH;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure respect for the ICH of the communities, groups, and individuals concerned;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To raise awareness at the local, national, and international levels of the importance of the ICH, and ensure mutual appreciation thereof;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide for global cooperation and assistance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> Intergovernmental Committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Safeguarding of the ICH <\/span><b>advances the objectives of the 2003 Convention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ensures their effective implementation across Member States.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fulfilling this mandate, <\/span><b>the committee:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promotes and <\/span><b>monitors <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the objectives and <\/span><b>implementation of the 2003 Convention.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provides <\/span><b>guidance on best practices <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and recommends measures for safeguarding ICH.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepares and <\/span><b>submits to the General Assembl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y the <\/span><b>draft plan for the use of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Fund.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Mobilises additional resources for the Fund<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in accordance with the Convention\u2019s provisions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drafts and <\/span><b>proposes operational directives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the implementation of the Convention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Examines periodic reports <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submitted <\/span><b>by States Parties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and compiles summaries for the General Assembly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Evaluates requests from States Parties <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>makes decisions regarding:<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Inscription of elements on UNESCO\u2019s ICH Lists <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(as per Articles 16, 17, and 18).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Granting of international assistance.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Membership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has <\/span><b>24 members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are elected for a <\/span><b>term of four years.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>election of new members<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes place <\/span><b>every two years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the ordinary session of the General Assembly of States Parties.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>India is currently a member <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the committee (2022-2026).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a
