text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Monroe Doctrine, <\/span><b>articulated by U.S. President James Monroe in 1823<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a significant <\/span><b>U.S. foreign policy statement <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aimed at <\/span><b>preventing European intervention in the Americas.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primarily the <\/span><b>work of Secretary of State John Quincy Adams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Monroe Doctrine <\/span><b>forbade European interference in the American hemisphere<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but also <\/span><b>asserted U.S. neutrality in regard to future European conflicts.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>origins <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Monroe Doctrine stem from <\/span><b>attempts by several European power<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s to <\/span><b>reassert their influence in the Americas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>early 1820s.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In North America, <\/span><b>Russia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had<\/span><b> attempted to expand its influence in the Alaska <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">territory, and in <\/span><b>Central and South America,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the U.S. government <\/span><b>feared a Spanish colonial resurgence.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Britain <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too was actively <\/span><b>seeking a major role<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the political and economic future of the <\/span><b>Americas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Adams feared a subservient role for the United States in an Anglo-American alliance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>United States invoked<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Monroe Doctrine to defend<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its <\/span><b>increasingly imperialistic role in the Americas in the mid-19th century.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it was <\/span><b>not until the Spanish-American War in 1898<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the <\/span><b>United States declared war against a European power over its interference in the American hemisphere.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctrine has had <\/span><b>lasting impacts on U.S. relations with its southern neighbors, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflecting America&#8217;s desire to assert its influence while advocating for independence and self-determination in the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>isolationist position of the Monroe Doctrine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was also a <\/span><b>cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy in the 19th century.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
