


{"id":7751,"date":"2022-11-11T10:21:11","date_gmt":"2022-11-11T04:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=7751"},"modified":"2025-03-28T22:40:23","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T17:10:23","slug":"university-grants-commissions-ugc-new-regulations-on-phd-doctor-of-philosophy-degrees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/university-grants-commissions-ugc-new-regulations-on-phd-doctor-of-philosophy-degrees\/","title":{"rendered":"University Grants Commission\u2019s (UGC) new regulations on PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About University Grants Commission\u2019s (UGC) new regulations on PhD degrees:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Under the new rules, UGC has made a series of significant modifications to the eligibility requirements, admissions process, and evaluation methodologies governing doctoral programmes in colleges and universities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Highlights:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Students who have completed a\u00a0<strong>four-year undergraduate<\/strong>\u00a0course will be eligible for direct admission to a doctorate programme.\n<ul>\n<li>Candidate should have a minimum of 75 per cent marks in \u201caggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>In case the candidate does not have 75 per cent marks in a four-year undergraduate program, she has to pursue a one-year master\u2019s programme and score at least 55 per cent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The new Rules discontinue the\u00a0<strong>Phil programme<\/strong>\u00a0altogether. However, that will have no bearing on those holding or pursuing M.Phil degrees currently.<\/li>\n<li>Universities and colleges will be free to admit students through the\u00a0<strong>NET (National Eligibility Test)\/JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) qualification route<\/strong>\u00a0as well as entrance exams at the level of the institutions.<\/li>\n<li>If an individual institution can holds its own entrance tests to admit students, then the candidates need not write the NET or similar exams. The \u201c<strong>entrance test shall consist of 50 per cent research methodology and 50 per cent subject specific\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Where the selection is done by entrance tests conducted by individual universities, a weightage of\u00a0<strong>70 per cent will be given to performance in the written test, and 30 per cent to the interview.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>UGC has introduced a new requirement for PhD scholars, irrespective of discipline, to train in teaching \/ education\/ pedagogy\/ writing related to their chosen subject during their doctoral period.\u00a0<strong>They may also be assigned four to six hours per week of teaching\/ research assistantship for conducting tutorial or laboratory work and evaluations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>no longer required to publish research articles in peer-reviewed publications or present in conferences.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Working professionals can now enrol in part-time PhD programmes. The institute will require a\u00a0<strong>\u201cNo Objection Certificate (NOC)\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0from the appropriate authority in the organisation where the candidate is employed.
