{"id":79223,"date":"2025-12-23T13:22:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-23T07:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=79223"},"modified":"2025-12-23T14:30:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T09:00:25","slug":"mars-atmosphere-and-volatile-evolution-maven-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mars-atmosphere-and-volatile-evolution-maven-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) Mission Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASA has lost contact with its Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft, the Mars orbiter that has worked for more than a decade to study how the planet\u2019s atmosphere is escaping into space.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) Mission<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>first spacecraft mission dedicated <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><b>surveying<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>upper atmosphere of Mars.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is part of <\/span><b>NASA&#8217;s Mars Exploration Program,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an unprecedented, multi-decade campaign to comprehensively understand Mars and its suitability to host past or present life.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It aims to understand the <\/span><b>role that loss of atmospheric gas to space played in changing the Martian climate <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over time.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>launched <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in November <\/span><b>2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and arrived at Mars in September 2014.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAVEN orbits Mars every 3.5 hours and gets as close as 150 km to its surface.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It carries <\/span><b>three packages of instruments.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>One package studies <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>solar wind and its impact on Mars\u2019s ionosphere.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Since <\/span><b>Mars has no magnetic field<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, its <\/span><b>atmosphere <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would be <\/span><b>slowly removed by interaction with the solar wind<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>second package<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an <\/span><b>ultraviolet spectrometer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><b>studies the upper atmosphere.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>third package<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>mass spectrometer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that studies the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">composition of the upper atmosphere. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>MAVEN<b style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> found that Mars lost<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">2\/3 of its early atmosphere to space.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/epaper.thehindu.com\/ccidist-ws\/th\/th_delhi\/issues\/162771\/OPS\/GI8FBDIG7.1+G19FBDJ7K.1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) Mission is the first spacecraft mission dedicated to surveying the upper atmosphere of Mars.
