{"id":79746,"date":"2026-02-10T11:39:47","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T06:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=79746"},"modified":"2026-02-10T12:59:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T07:29:00","slug":"kimberly-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kimberly-process\/","title":{"rendered":"Kimberly Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Kimberley Process Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has assumed the chair of the Kimberley Process (KP) for the year 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Kimberley Process\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>coalition of governments, civil society and the diamond industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>eliminate the trade in so-called conflict diamonds.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conflict diamonds are defined by the relevant United Nations Security Council resolution (UNSC resolution 1459) as \u201c<\/span><b>rough diamonds used by rebel movements or their allies to finance conflict<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aimed at undermining legitimate governments\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on a mandate from the United Nations, the Kimberley Process<\/span><b> regulates the international trade in rough diamonds.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Participants <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the scheme <\/span><b>are required to:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Satisfy \u2018minimum requirements\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>establish national legislation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, institutions and i<\/span><b>mport\/export controls;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commit to transparent practices and to the <\/span><b>exchange of critical statistical data;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Trade only with other participants in the Scheme;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Certify shipments as conflict-free.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently it has 60 participants, representing <\/span><b>86 countries <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(with the EU as a single participant) which account for more than <\/span><b>99% of the global rough diamond production and trade.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The KP <\/span><b>meets twice a year<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Intersessional and Plenary meetings. It is chaired by a participating country on an annual, rotating basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a <\/span><b>consensus-based body, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the KP relies on the constructive engagement from all participants of the tripartite structure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS)?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the mechanism the KP uses to <\/span><b>prevent the trade of conflict diamonds.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under this scheme, the <\/span><b>Government implements safeguards on shipments of rough diamonds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> certifies the diamond as conflict-free.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to this Scheme, <\/span><b>each rough diamond shipment must be accompanied<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><b>Kimberley Process certificate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><b> transported in a tamper-resistant container.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The KP certificate states the authenticity of the rough diamond.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 2003,<\/span><b> India has been actively participating<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the KPCS process.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The D<\/span><b>epartment of Commerce <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the <\/span><b>nodal Department.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Gem &amp; Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is designated as the K<\/span><b>PCS Importing and Exporting Authority in India.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>GJEPC <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is responsible for<\/span><b> issuing KP Certificates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is also the <\/span><b>custodian of KP Certificates received in the country.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/a-chance-for-india-to-polish-the-kimberley-process\/article70612197.ece#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kimberley Process is a coalition of governments, civil society and the diamond industry to eliminate the trade in so-called conflict diamonds.
