India has a globally strong pharmaceutical sector, yet it remains dependent on imports for several critical bulk drugs due to cost advantages abroad. To address this vulnerability, the Department of Pharmaceuticals launched the Bulk Drug Park Scheme in 2020 with a total outlay of Rs. 3000 crore. The initiative focuses on creating large scale, integrated manufacturing ecosystems with shared infrastructure to reduce production costs, enhance quality compliance, and improve supply security for essential medicines.

Bulk Drug Park

Bulk Drug Parks in India are dedicated manufacturing zones created to support large scale production of APIs, drug intermediates, and key starting materials. Under the national scheme, three states: Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh received in principle approval after competitive evaluation of proposals submitted by thirteen states. These parks are spread across large contiguous land parcels and are designed to provide world class common infrastructure facilities. The scheme reflects cooperative federalism, where the Centre provides financial assistance while states execute and operate the parks through dedicated implementing agencies.

Bulk
