{"id":81048,"date":"2026-01-05T13:52:33","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T08:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=81048"},"modified":"2026-01-05T14:13:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T08:43:15","slug":"spina-bifida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/spina-bifida\/","title":{"rendered":"Spina Bifida"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Spina Bifida Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many countries across the world have initiated programmes to create awareness to prevent Spina Bifida through folic acid supplementation but India is yet to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Spina Bifida<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>birth defect of the spinal cord<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that causes serious childhood paralysis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It occurs when the <\/span><b>spine and spinal cord<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a fetus do not fully develop during the <\/span><b>embryonic period.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The condition occurs during <\/span><b>early pregnancy,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can range from mild to severe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Causes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>cause is not known<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It&#8217;s thought that a combination of <\/span><b>genetic, nutritional<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and environmental risk factors causes the condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Types of Spina Bifida<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Myelomeningocele: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>most serious<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form of the condition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this type, part of the <\/span><b>spinal cord and nerves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><b>exposed through a sac at<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the opening of the gap in the spine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Meningocele:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a <\/span><b>less common type<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of spina bifida that occurs when the meninges, or the <\/span><b>protective membranes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the <\/span><b>spinal cord<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, push out through the opening in a fluid-filled sac.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Spina bifida occulta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is the <\/span><b>mildest form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the condition in which one or more of the vertebrae not forming properly, resulting in a small gap.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symptoms: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowel and bladder issues, <\/span><b>back pain, weakness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or lack of movement in the legs and <\/span><b>loss of sensation in the legs.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prevention: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be prevented <\/span><b>largely by having folic acid in the<\/b> <b>early weeks of pregnancy.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There <\/span><b>is no cure for the condition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; however, treatment options are available to manage symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/health\/why-awareness-about-folic-acid-to-prevent-spina-bifida-must-become-a-public-health-priority\/article70402726.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spina Bifida is a birth defect of the spinal cord that causes serious childhood paralysis.
