Dam<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Salal Dam, also known as <\/span><b>Salal Hydroelectric Power Station<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a <\/span><b>690 MW run-of-the-river<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> power project on the<\/span><b> Chenab River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Reasi District of <\/span><b>Jammu and Kashmir.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the dam was first conceptualized in 1920, the construction commenced in 1970 and subsequently entered into <\/span><b>commercial operation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>1987<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the<\/span><b> first hydropower project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was<\/span><b> built by India under the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/indus-water-treaty\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indus Water Treaty<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regime in Kashmir.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is developed and owned by <\/span><b>National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Dam Features:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an<\/span><b> embankment dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> constructed primarily from<\/span><b> locally sourced materials<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which include <\/span><b>gravel, sand, and clay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, demonstrating a <\/span><b>high thermal mass <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that aids in the regulation of temperature fluctuations within the structure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dam\u2019s height of 100 meters and length of 1,200 meters creates a reservoir with a capacity of approximately 1,200 million cubic meters.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Power Distribution:\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Jammu and Kashmir receives 12.5 percent of the energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generated from the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> rest is transmitted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><b>Northern Grid<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where it is distributed to the states of<\/span><b> Punjab, Haryana, Delhi,
