{"id":81054,"date":"2026-01-05T13:45:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T08:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=81054"},"modified":"2026-01-05T16:44:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T11:14:55","slug":"salal-hydroelectric-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/salal-hydroelectric-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Salal Hydroelectric Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Salal Hydroelectric Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs recently directed sediment removal at the Salal Power Project in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure maximum utilisation of water resources, in the wake of the Indus Waters Treaty being kept in abeyance between India and Pakistan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Salal Hydroelectric Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>690 MW run-of-the-river <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">power project on the <\/span><b>Chenab River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Reasi District of <\/span><b>Jammu and Kashmir.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the <\/span><b>plan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a water reservoir was originally <\/span><b>conceived in pre-independent India,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>planning <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the project <\/span><b>started in the 1960s.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project <\/span><b>construction commenced in 1970<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and subsequently entered into <\/span><b>commercial operation in 1987.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is <\/span><b>developed and owned by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC).\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the f<\/span><b>irst hydropower project, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which was <\/span><b>built by India under the Indus Water Treaty regime in Kashmir.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Salal Dam <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is 130 meters high with an elevation of 1627 feet above mean sea level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Jammu and Kashmir receives 12.5 percent of the energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generated from the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>rest is transmitted to the Northern Grid,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where it is distributed to the states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jammu and Kashmir also purchases additional power at regular prices.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/jammu-and-kashmir\/with-indus-waters-treaty-in-abeyance-manohar-lal-calls-for-desilting-of-salal-project\/article70471356.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Salal Hydroelectric Project is a 690 MW run-of-the-river power project on the Chenab River in the Reasi District of Jammu and Kashmir.
