text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taiwan Strait, also called <\/span><b>Formosa Strait<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>separates continental Asia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the island of <\/span><b>Taiwan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>extends from the South China Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the southwest <\/span><b>to the East China Sea <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the northeast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It<\/span><b> runs between<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>coast of the Fujian (Fukien) Province <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>island of Taiwan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has an <\/span><b>average width of 180 km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while its narrowest part is 130 km wide.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>sits on Asia\u2019s continental shelf <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that runs along the entire stretch of the strait.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>relatively shallow.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It has an average depth of about 490 ft and a minimum depth of 82 ft.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ports<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The chief ports are <\/span><b>Amoy in mainland China <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Kao-hsiung in Taiwan.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Several rivers, including the <\/span><b>Jiulong and Min rivers from China\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fujian Province, drain into the Taiwan Strait.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Islands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kinmen and Matsu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are two of the largest and most significant islands in the strait located off the <\/span><b>Fujian coast of China.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest islands<\/span><b> along the Taiwan side<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <\/span><b>Penghu (or Pescadores),<\/b> <b>Xiamen, and Pingtan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Xiamen and Pingtan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Islands are <\/span><b>administered by the People\u2019s Republic of China, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while the other three islands: <\/span><b>Penghu (or Pescadores), Kinmen, and Matsu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><b>under the administration of <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Republic of China (<\/span><b>Taiwan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Penghu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(or Pescadores) Island is the <\/span><b>largest and most populous island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Taiwan Strait.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It serves as a<\/span><b> busy navigational waterway<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on which millions of tons of cargo are ferried annually. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
