Employment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Government of India, in matters pertaining to <\/span><b>occupational safety, health, and welfare of persons employed in mines.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has its <\/span><b>headquarters <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at <\/span><b>Dhanbad (Jharkhand)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headed by the Director-General of Mines Safety.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>History<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>For administering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the provisions of the <\/span><b>Indian Mines Act, 1901,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Government of India set up a <\/span><b>&#8220;Bureau of Mines Inspection&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the 7th January <\/span><b>1902 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with headquarters at Calcutta.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name of the organization was changed to the Department of Mines in 1904, and its headquarters shifted to Dhanbad in 1908.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 01.01.1960, the organization was renamed as &#8220;Office of the Chief Inspector of Mines&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 01.05.<\/span><b>1967<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the office has been <\/span><b>redesignated as the DGMS.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>mission <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the DGMS is to <\/span><b>continually improve safety and health standards, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practices, and performance <\/span><b>in the mining industry<\/b> <b>and upstream petroleum industry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><b>implementing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proactive<\/span><b> safety and health strategies;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>continuous improvement of processes;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>effective use of resources;<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commitment and professional behaviour in its personnel.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Under the Constitution of India,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>safety<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, welfare,<\/span><b> and health of workers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> employed <\/span><b>in mines <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are the<\/span><b> concern of the Central Governmen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t (<\/span><b>Entry 55-Union List-Article 246)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The objective is regulated by the <\/span><b>Mines Act, 1952,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Rules and Regulations framed thereunder.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are a<\/span><b>dministered by the DGMS.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2212057&amp;reg=3&amp;lang=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) is the Regulatory Agency under the Ministry of Labour &#038;
