{"id":8182,"date":"2024-04-11T03:30:30","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T22:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=8182"},"modified":"2025-10-01T11:05:23","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T05:35:23","slug":"national-investment-and-infrastructure-fund-niif","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-investment-and-infrastructure-fund-niif\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>NIIF is a <strong>fund manager<\/strong> that <strong>invests in infrastructu<\/strong>re and related <strong>sectors in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>India\u2019s first-ever sovereign wealth fund<\/strong> (SWF), which was set up in <strong>2015<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>An institution <strong>anchored by the Government of India<\/strong>, NIIF is <strong>a collaborative investment platform<\/strong> for <strong>international and Indian investors<\/strong> with a mandate to invest equity capital in domestic infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li>NIIF <strong>invests across<\/strong> asset classes such as i<strong>nfrastructure, private equity, and other diversified sector<\/strong>s in India, with the objective of generating attractive risk-adjusted returns for its investors.<\/li>\n<li>It invests in <strong>greenfield (new), brownfield (existing), <\/strong>and <strong>stalled projects.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>NIIF is <strong>49% owned by<\/strong> the <strong>Indian government<\/strong> and has more than $4.9 billion in assets under management, making it the <strong>country\u2019s biggest infrastructure fund<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>NIIF benefits from its association with the Government yet is <strong>independent in its investment decisions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>majority-owned by institutional investors<\/strong> and <strong>managed professionally<\/strong> by a team with experience in investments and infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li>The funds are <strong>registered as <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-are-alternative-investment-funds-aifs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alternative Investment Fund (AIF)<\/a>with the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and are currently <strong>raising capital from domestic and international institutional investors.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>NIIF manages capital invested<\/strong> currently <strong>through four funds:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>NIIF Master Fund:<\/strong> This fund primarily invests in <strong>infra-related projects<\/strong> such as roads, ports, airports, and power. It is the <strong>largest infrastructure fund<\/strong> in India. <strong>NIIF Private Markets Fund<\/strong>: <strong>Invests in funds managed by third-party managers<\/strong> in infrastructure and associated sectors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>NIIF Strategic Opportunities Fund<\/strong>: It invests and develops large-scale <strong>businesses and greenfield projects<\/strong> that are <strong>of strategic importance<\/strong> to the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India-Japan<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fund: NIIF\u2019s first bilateral fund<\/strong> invests in<strong> environment preservation<\/strong> in India.<\/li>\n<li>It also seeks to enable opportunities for collaboration between Indian and Japanese companies in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Fund has a <strong>target corpus<\/strong> of US$600 million, with the <strong>Government of India contributing 49% a<\/strong>nd the remaining <strong>51% contributed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation<\/strong>, a policy-based financial institution wholly owned by the Government of Japan.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF)?<\/h3>\n<p>AIF means any Indian investment vehicle that collects funds from sophisticated investors, whether Indian or foreign, for investing in accordance with a defined investment policy. Alternative investment funds are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). However, AIF Funds are not subject to SEBI\u2019s (Mutual Funds) Regulations, 1996, SEBI\u2019s (Collective Investment Schemes) Regulations, 1999, or any other fund management regulations.
