{"id":8186,"date":"2024-05-21T11:34:53","date_gmt":"2024-05-21T06:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=8186"},"modified":"2025-10-13T11:28:45","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T05:58:45","slug":"what-is-the-copernicus-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-copernicus-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) Programme?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) Programme:\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Named after the renowned 15th-century scientist Nicolaus Copernicus, the programme is the <strong>earth observation component of<\/strong> the <strong>European Union\u2019s (EU) space initiative<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Copernicus<\/strong> was <strong>launched in 1998<\/strong> and was earlier known as the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security Programme (GMES).<\/li>\n<li>The programme <strong>uses global data from satellites<\/strong>, and <strong>ground-based<\/strong>, <strong>airborne<\/strong>, and sea-borne <strong>measurement systems<\/strong> to <strong>provide environment-related information<\/strong> to researchers, policymakers, public authorities, international organisations, and commercial and private users <strong>to address issues related to climate change, disaster management, and agriculture<\/strong>, among other uses.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>space segment uses a group of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/types-of-satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\">satellites<\/a>, <strong>called the Sentinels <\/strong>and the <strong>Contributing Missions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is complemented by a <strong>ground segment <\/strong>which <strong>includes in-situ sensors<\/strong> that <strong>provide access to the Sentinels<\/strong> and Contributing Missions data.<\/li>\n<li>Presently, the <strong>programme is implemented by EU member states<\/strong> with the <strong>support of the European Space Agency (ESA)<\/strong> for the space component and the <strong>European Environment Agency (EEA)<\/strong> for the in-situ component.<\/li>\n<li>Notably, <strong>data<\/strong> from the Copernicus programme <strong>is freely available and accessible to all.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Active since 2012, the <strong>Copernicus EMS works on two models<\/strong>\u2014<strong>on-demand mapping and early warning and monitoring<\/strong>\u2014to issue warnings, risk assessments, and information on the impact of disasters worldwide, before, during, or after a crisis.<\/li>\n<li>While on-demand mapping offers detailed information for specific emergencies, early warning provides critical geospatial data through monitoring and forecasts for floods, droughts, and forest fires.<\/li>\n<li><strong>How does rapid mapping work?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The Copernicus EMS on-demand rapid mapping <strong>provides geospatial information within a few hours or days of a request<\/strong> to support efforts in the immediate aftermath of an emergency or a disaster anywhere in the world.<\/li>\n<li>It acquires, processes, and<strong> analyses satellite images<\/strong>, <strong>geospatial data, and relevant social media in rapid mode<\/strong> to provide information<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The service <strong>offers four \u201cproducts\u201d<\/strong>, <strong>one pre-event reference<\/strong> and <strong>three post-event<\/strong> (first estimate, delineation, and grading).<\/li>\n<li>Each comprises delivery packages, including maps and a vector package of spatial data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the European Union (EU)?<\/h3>\n<p>European Commission (EC) is an institution of the European Union (EU) and its constituent entities that makes up the organization\u2019s executive arm.
