{"id":82757,"date":"2026-01-16T12:10:27","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T06:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=82757"},"modified":"2026-01-16T12:10:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T06:40:27","slug":"jamma-bane-lands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/jamma-bane-lands\/","title":{"rendered":"Jamma Bane Lands"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Jamma Bane Lands Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, the Karnataka government has amended its land revenue law to modernise an age-old system of land records called Jamma Bane lands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Jamma Bane Lands<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word Jamma <\/span><b>means hereditary.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jamma Bane tenure is a form of land holding <\/span><b>prevalent in Kodagu district of Karnataka.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is distinctly different from other classes of land holdings in the state.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>History:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These lands <\/span><b>were originally granted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by erstwhile <\/span><b>kings of Coorg and the British<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 between 1600 and 1800 to local communities in <\/span><b>return for military service.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These lands comprise <\/span><b>both wetlands,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used for paddy cultivation, and <\/span><b>forested highlands,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which have transformed into the now-famous <\/span><b>coffee estates of Coorg.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Relevant Acts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>Coorg Land Revenue and Regulations Act, 1899<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was in place to govern land ownership in the region till the introduction of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Issue with Jamma Bane Lands<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ownership:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Jamma Bane land ownership is registered in the <\/span><b>name of the original pattedar from a family.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over generations, the names of the new owners are added alongside the name of the pattedar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The land ownership name could not be changed to reflect new owners.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/explained-law\/explained-coorgs-unique-land-record-system-that-prompted-karnataka-government-to-amend-its-land-law-10475099\/?ref=explained_pg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jamma Bane Lands is a form of land holding prevalent in Kodagu district of Karnataka.
