{"id":82763,"date":"2026-01-16T13:14:51","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T07:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=82763"},"modified":"2026-01-16T14:48:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T09:18:50","slug":"pufferfish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pufferfish\/","title":{"rendered":"Pufferfish"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Pufferfish Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, scientists have confirmed India\u2019s first case of pufferfish poisoning.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Pufferfish<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pufferfish belong to the <\/span><b>order Tetraodontiformes.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Other names:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They are locally known by names such as <\/span><b>toadfish, patkafish, balloonfish and fugu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Habitat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pufferfish are <\/span><b>omnivorous and benthic in habitat.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Distribution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is primarily found in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/western-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Western Ghats<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and major basins such as <\/span><b>the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Mahanadi.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freshwater pufferfish species reported from India are <\/span><b>often endemic to specific geographical areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and serve as indicators of healthy river ecosystems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can <\/span><b>inflate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a ball shape to <\/span><b>evade predators.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Status in India:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Indian waters currently support <\/span><b>eight genera<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>32 species of pufferfish<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Conservation Status :IUCN:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vulnerable\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Pufferfish Poisoning<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some puffer fish carry <\/span><b>tetrodotoxin (TTX)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is one of the most potent <\/span><b>neurotoxins known in nature.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tetrodotoxin <\/span><b>blocks nerve sodium channels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can cause paralysis, respiratory failure and death.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TTX consists of an <\/span><b>oxygenated 2,4-dioxaadamantane<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> core and a <\/span><b>guanidinium group.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TTX <\/span><b>is heat-stable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>water-soluble<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a <\/span><b>non-protein quinazoline<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> derivative.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence suggests that pufferfish <\/span><b>do not synthesise the toxin themselves.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, TTX is believed to originate from <\/span><b>symbiotic or ingested bacteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><b>Vibrio, Pseudomonas, Aeromonas and Bacillus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/wildlife-biodiversity\/indias-first-confirmed-case-of-pufferfish-poisoning-reveals-an-invisible-riverine-health-risk#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">DTE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pufferfish are omnivorous and benthic in habitat.
