text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a<\/span><b> rare, subterranean amphibian species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, discovered in the <\/span><b>northern <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/western-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\">Western Ghats<\/a> of Maharashtra.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>name <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gegeneophis valmiki <\/span><b>honors <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>historic Maharshi Valmiki Mandir located near the discovery site.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It belongs to the <\/span><b>genus Gegeneophis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commonly called <\/span><b>blind caecilians.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caecilians, often <\/span><b>called<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><b>hidden amphibians\u201d,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><b>limbless<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>worm-like <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creatures that <\/span><b>spend most of their lives underground.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They look and <\/span><b>move <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so much l<\/span><b>ike earthworms.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><b>do not croak or call like frogs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and their <\/span><b>eyes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><b>buried beneath layers of skin and bone,<\/b> <b>making <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">field<\/span><b> identification exceptionally difficult.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond rarity, caecilians play an important ecological role.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Their burrowing improves soil aeration and structure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, their <\/span><b>feeding helps regulate soil invertebrates,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and they<\/span><b> form part of the food web for birds,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reptiles and small mammals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also represent a key <\/span><b>evolutionary link between aquatic and terrestrial vertebrates.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Globally<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, caecilians account for just <\/span><b>231 of the world\u2019s 8,983 known amphibian <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">species.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India records 42 caecilian <\/span><b>species <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among its 457 amphibians.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Western Ghats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alone are home to <\/span><b>26 endemic caecilians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with 11 belonging to the Gegeneophis group.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
