text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>island group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><b>South <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pacific-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Ocean<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 800 km <\/span><b>east of New Zealand.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These islands are <\/span><b>New Zealand&#8217;s most easterly territory.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Composed of 1<\/span><b>0 islands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are<\/span><b> primarily of volcanic formation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but areas of limestone indicate that they may once have been part of New Zealand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only the<\/span><b> two main islands are inhabited:<\/b> <b>Chatham Island and Pitt Island.<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Chatham Island,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>largest <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the islands, has a high <\/span><b>southern tableland flanked by<\/b> <b>towering cliffs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a gentle northern portion encompassing extensive waterways, low peatlands and long sandy beaches.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Pitt Island<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a <\/span><b>heartland of forest <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and a<\/span><b> coast of wild cliffs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, headlands, and sandy beaches.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both islands are surrounded by a number of smaller islands, all within a radius of approximately 50 km.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Chatham Islands is the <\/span><b>first inhabited place in the world to see the rising sun each day.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The islands were <\/span><b>first inhabited by Moriori,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who named the islands &#8216;Rekohu&#8217; \u2013 translated as &#8216;misty skies&#8217; or &#8216;misty sun&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>European sealers and whalers were next to arrive, followed by M\u0101ori from New Zealand, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who named the islands &#8216;Wharekauri&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Descendants of Moriori still reside <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the Chatham Islands today.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>total population in 2024 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was estimated to be <\/span><b>720<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>main settlement is Waitangi. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other settlements are Te One, Port Hutt, K\u0101ingaroa, and \u014cwenga.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
