justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The revised Reserve Bank &#8211; Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, unveiled by the central bank recently, aims to enhance complaint resolution efficiency for bank customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Reserve Bank \u2013 Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is aimed at further improving the efficiency of the <\/span><b>resolution of complaints filed by aggrieved customers of banks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> other regulated entities.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It will<\/span><b> come into force <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on <\/span><b>July 1, 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, replacing the existing Integrated Ombudsman Scheme of 2021.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>proceedings <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the Scheme shall be <\/span><b>summary in nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and shall <\/span><b>not be bound by any rules of evidence.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reserve Bank of India (<\/span><b>RBI) will appoint one or more of its officers as RBI Ombudsman and RBI Deputy Ombudsman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to carry out the functions entrusted to them under the Scheme.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>appointments <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be made <\/span><b>generally for a period of three years at a time.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>RBI will establish a Centralised Receipt and Processing Centre at one or more locations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as may be decided, <\/span><b>to receive complaints<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filed under the Scheme and process them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Who does it cover?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entities covered under the new scheme include <\/span><b>commercial banks,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> r<\/span><b>egional rural banks, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">state and central <\/span><b>co-operative banks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and urban co-operative banks with deposits of Rs 50 crore or more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-a-non-banking-financial-company-nbfc\/\" target=\"_blank\">NBFCs<\/a> that accept deposits or have assets over Rs 100 crore and engage in customer dealings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also included.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, all <\/span><b>non-bank prepaid payment issuers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><b>digital wallets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>credit information companie<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s that handle credit scores, are <\/span><b>part of this list.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scheme <\/span><b>excludes housing finance and core investment companies.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>What kind of complaints can be filed?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers can file complaints<\/span><b> related to deficiency in service,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as delays, <\/span><b>failure to follow RBI directions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or<\/span><b> inadequate customer service.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However<\/span><b>, issues involving commercial judgment of institutions,<\/b> <b>disputes between regulated entities, employer\u2013employee matters,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>cases already before courts o<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r tribunals are <\/span><b>excluded<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>key condition <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for filing a complaint with the ombudsman is that the <\/span><b>customer must first approach the concerned entity.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>ombudsman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be <\/span><b>approached only if there is no response within 30 days or if the customer is dissatisfied with the reply.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Is there a cap on compensation?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is <\/span><b>no limit <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the <\/span><b>value of the dispute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can be brought before the ombudsman.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RBI <\/span><b>Ombudsman can award compensation of up to \u20b930 lakh for consequential financial loss <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>up to \u20b93 lakh for non-financial losses <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as harassment, mental anguish, or loss of time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>How can complaints be filed?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complaints can be <\/span><b>filed online through the RBI\u2019s Complaint Management System portal, or sent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by email or post <\/span><b>to a centralised receipt and processing centre.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The complaint handling process:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The RBI Ombudsman (or Deputy) acts like a judge for these disputes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>process emphasises conciliation and settlement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between the customer and the regulated entity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>If a settlement cannot be reached<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>ombudsman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can <\/span><b>pass an award <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after giving both sides an opportunity to be heard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>If a customer is unhappy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the decision of the Ombudsman, she can a<\/span><b>ppeal to the appellate authority<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RBI&#8217;s executive director) <\/span><b>within 30 days.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Entities can appeal too, but only with senior approval <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and not if
