{"id":8357,"date":"2023-04-07T01:28:30","date_gmt":"2023-04-06T19:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=8357"},"modified":"2025-03-29T02:32:45","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T21:02:45","slug":"what-is-the-guyana-venezuela-border-dispute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-guyana-venezuela-border-dispute\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Guyana-Venezuela Border Dispute?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Guyana-Venezuela Border Dispute:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>History:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The land boundary between Guyana and Venezuela has been d<strong>isputed since its colonial inception between British and Spanish powers<\/strong> in South America.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>1840s<\/strong>, the <strong>British government<\/strong> <strong>had the border unilaterally surveyed<\/strong>, but the proposed line encroached on Venezuelan territorial claims.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>boundary has since been arbitrated (1899)<\/strong> and bilaterally agreed upon following demarcation (1905) but remains in conflict.<\/li>\n<li>While the <strong>British line, accepted by Guyana,<\/strong> is the <strong>current de facto boundary,<\/strong> V<strong>enezuela maintains a historic claim to all territory<\/strong> currently administered by Guyana <strong>west of the Essequibo River.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Venezuelan contents that the Arbitral Award of 1899<\/strong> about the frontier between British Guiana and Venezuela <strong>is null and void.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disputed Area:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Venezuela\u2019s <strong>claim along the Essequibo River extends for 1,034 kilometers<\/strong> before reaching Brazilian territory.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>At stake is approximately 1<strong>42,795 square kilometers<\/strong> that is currently <strong>administered by Guyana.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Offshore the disputed land territory is<\/strong> <strong>maritime space<\/strong> that was recently discovered to be rich in hydrocarbon resources, upping the stakes of the land boundary dispute.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current Status:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Guyana submitted <\/strong>the dispute <strong>to the International Court of Justice in 2018.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Despite <strong>Venezuela\u2019s withdrawal from the case<\/strong>, proceedings are currently ongoing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is the International Court of Justice (ICJ)?<\/h3>\n<p>The International Court of Justice, which has its seat in The Hague,is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
