


{"id":84807,"date":"2026-01-29T17:49:33","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T12:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=84807"},"modified":"2026-01-29T17:51:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T12:21:50","slug":"taj-trapezium-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/taj-trapezium-zone\/","title":{"rendered":"Taj Trapezium Zone, Background, Industries Classification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) is a defined <\/span><b>area of 10,400 sq km around the Taj Mahal<\/b> <b>to protect the monument from pollution.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It spread across 10,400 sq km in <\/span><b>Agra, Firozabad, Mathura, Hathras and Etah district, and Rajasthan&#8217;s Bharatpur District.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It comprises monuments including three World Heritage Sites, the <\/span><b>Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taj Trapezium Zone is so named since it is located around the Taj Mahal and is shaped like a trapezoid.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Taj Trapezium Zone Background\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taj Trapezium Zone was created by the supreme court in <\/span><b>M.C. Mehta v. Union of India &amp; Ors. Case 1996<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in response to a <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/public-interest-litigation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>public interest litigation<\/strong><\/a> (PIL) filed in supreme court to protect the Taj Mahal from <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/environmental-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>environmental pollution<\/strong><\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court banned the use of coal\/ coke in industries located in the TTZ with a mandate for switching over from coal\/ coke to natural gas, and relocating them outside the TTZ or shutting down.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court also directed the creation of the <\/span><b>Taj Trapezium Zone Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/environment-protection-act-1986\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Environment (Protection) Act, 1986<\/strong><\/a>. The Authority was entrusted with regulating industrial activity, construction practices, vehicular emissions, and other pollution-generating sources in the ecologically sensitive Taj region.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Taj Trapezium Zone Industries Classification\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For effective pollution control, industries under the Taj Trapezium Zone have been classified into <\/span><b>four categories <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">based on the pollution potential of industries <\/span><b>namely Red, Orange, Green, and White.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highly polluting industries under the Red category are strictly restricted, while only environmentally friendly, non-polluting small, tiny, and micro-scale industries are permitted to operate within the zone, ensuring a balance between conservation and limited economic activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The classification is based on a Pollution Index (PI), which considers <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/water-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\">water pollution<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/air-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\">air pollution<\/a>, and hazardous waste generation :\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Red Category (High Pollution Potential &#8211; PI \u2265 60) :<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are highly polluting industries.
