


{"id":85191,"date":"2026-02-02T12:35:01","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T07:05:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=85191"},"modified":"2026-02-02T12:35:01","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T07:05:01","slug":"pasumpon-muthuramalinga-thevar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pasumpon-muthuramalinga-thevar\/","title":{"rendered":"Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, Early Life, Role in Freedom Struggle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a revered Indian freedom fighter, socialist leader, and politician from Tamil Nadu, often called the <\/span><b>\u201cTilak of the South\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Early Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasumpon Muthuramalinga was born on 30 October 1908 in Pasumpon, Ramnad District.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He belonged to the Thevar community.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He lived as a sadhu and was known for his simplicity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Role in Freedom Struggle\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasumpon Muthuramalinga was a <\/span><b>staunch nationalist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who <\/span><b>advocated militant nationalism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against colonial rule in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He actively participated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/quit-india-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Quit India Movement<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He played a key role in getting the <\/span><b>Criminal Tribes Act (CTA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> repealed in 1948 which was a discriminatory British legislation that branded certain communities as &#8220;criminals&#8221; by birth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He served as the <\/span><b>secretary of the Harijan Sevak Sangh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Ramnad district and fought for the upliftment of marginalized communities and against untouchability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was also <\/span><b>associated with the Temple Entry movement.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He played an important role in allowing Dalits to enter the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai alongside A. Vaidyanatha Iyer.\u200b<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He supported the Tamil culture and dignity but did not see it as separate from India. He even <\/span><b>wanted Hindustani as the national language<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but with Roman script.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar and Subhash Chandra Bose\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pasumpon Muthuramalinga was a <\/span><b>close ally of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He attended the Tripuri session of the Indian National Congress in 1939 and mobilised all south India votes for Bose.
