{"id":8545,"date":"2023-04-17T04:43:51","date_gmt":"2023-04-16T23:13:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=8545"},"modified":"2025-03-29T03:40:03","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T22:10:03","slug":"polar-crown-prominences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/polar-crown-prominences\/","title":{"rendered":"Polar Crown Prominences"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Polar Crown Prominences (PCP):<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>These are similar to <strong>normal solar prominences,<\/strong> which are loops of plasma, or ionized gas, that is ejected <strong>from the solar surface<\/strong> by magnetic fields.<\/li>\n<li>They occur <strong>near the sun&#8217;s magnetic poles<\/strong> at latitudes between 60 and 70 degrees North and South.<\/li>\n<li>Due to the much <strong>stronger magnetic fields<\/strong> near the poles they collapse back towards the sun.<\/li>\n<li>This collapse back to the sun has earned them the nickname &#8220;<strong>plasma waterfalls.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is a solar prominence?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a large, <strong>bright feature extending outward<\/strong> from the <strong>Sun&#8217;s surface.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These are anchored to the Sun&#8217;s <strong>surface in the photosphere<\/strong>, and extend outwards into the Sun&#8217;s hot outer atmosphere, called the corona.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>forms over <\/strong>timescales of <strong>about a day<\/strong>, and stable prominences may persist in the corona <strong>for several months<\/strong>, looping hundreds of thousands of miles into space.<\/li>\n<li>The red-glowing looped <strong>material is plasma<\/strong>, a hot gas comprised of <strong>electrically charged hydrogen and helium.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This plasma flows along a tangled and twisted structure of magnetic fields generated by the sun\u2019s internal dynamo.<\/li>\n<li>An erupting prominence occurs when such a structure <strong>becomes unstable and bursts<\/strong> outward, releasing the plasma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is a Solar flare?<\/h3>\n<p>A solar flare is a sudden and intense burst of radiation and energy that is released from the sun&#8217;s surface.
