{"id":85686,"date":"2026-02-03T12:18:35","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T06:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=85686"},"modified":"2026-02-03T12:33:44","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T07:03:44","slug":"pennaiyar-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pennaiyar-river\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennaiyar River"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Pennaiyar River Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court recently directed the Centre to constitute a tribunal to adjudicate the dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over the sharing of Pennaiyar River water.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Pennaiyar River<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pennaiyar River is a major river in southern India flowing through <\/span><b>Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also known as the <\/span><b>South Pennar River, Dakshina Pinakini <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Kannada, and <\/span><b>Thenpennai, Ponnaiyar, or Pennaiyar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Tamil.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Course:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>originates <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the<\/span><b> Nandi Hills<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Chikkaballapura district of <\/span><b>Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It then flows southward for <\/span><b>80 km through Karnataka<\/b> <b>to northwestern Tamil Nadu,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where it turns and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flows southeastward to<\/span><b> enter the Bay of Bengal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Cuddalore.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the<\/span><b> second longest river in Tamil Nadu,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stretching <\/span><b>497 km <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in length.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also the <\/span><b>second largest interstate east-flowing river basin,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> situated <\/span><b>between the Pennar and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cauvery-basin\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cauvery basins<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Basin is <\/span><b>bounded on the northwest and south<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by various <\/span><b>ranges of the Eastern Ghats, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like the <\/span><b>Velikonda Range<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>Nagari hills, the Javadu hills, the Shevaroy hill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s, the <\/span><b>Chitteri hills, and the Kalrayan hills, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and in the <\/span><b>east by the Bay of Bengal.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major <\/span><b>tributaries <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are the <\/span><b>Chinnar, Markanda, Vaniar, and Pamban.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy rains at the river\u2019s source cause sudden, but short-lived, floods.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river is <\/span><b>extensively dammed for irrigation, especially in Tamil Nadu.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also reservoirs at Krishnagiri and Sathanur.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Pennaiyar River<\/b><b> Dispute<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a water-sharing dispute between the Indian states of <\/span><b>Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
