They receive heavy rainfall throughout the year but have a lower average temperature as compared to Tropical Rainforest. They have dense vegetation, which is crucial to maintain the ecological balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Temperate Rainforest Location<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperate Rainforest is mainly located between <\/span><b>40\u00b0 to 60\u00b0 in both Northern and Southern Hemisphere.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are primarily located along the western coast of the continents, close to the oceans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the major locations are:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>North America:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pacific Northwest (USA and Canada). It is the home to the world&#8217;s largest temperate rainforests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>South America:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Southern Chile<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Europe:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Western Coastal region (UK and Norway)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Asia:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in some parts of Japan<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Oceania:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Southern Australia and New Zealand<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The longest stretch of tropical rainforest can be found in <\/span><b>northern California north to Alaska and along the coast of Southern Chile.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They extend about <\/span><b>1,200 miles from Oregon to Alaska.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India does not have any true Temperate Rainforest but some regions of Himalayas show similar characteristics.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Temperate Rainforest Climate<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall climate of Temperate Rainforest varies from <\/span><b>mild to moderate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and does not experience any extreme heat or cold.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The climate is pleasant throughout the year as the <strong>t<\/strong><\/span><b>emperature rarely rises above 27\u00b0C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in summer and <\/span><b>does not fall below 0\u00b0 in winters.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two major seasons over here are short, dry but foggy summers and long, wet winters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to continuous rainfall, winters are cold and wet, with the ocean winds keeping the temperature moderate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the summers are dry, cool and foggy and the fog further adds to the moisture pushing the growth of the plantation even when there is no rainfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The oceanic winds play a major role in keeping the climate moderate, by absorbing the heat in summer and releasing the heat in winters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mountain ranges contribute to the orographic rainfall and block the extreme continental effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Temperate Rainforest Temperature and Precipitation<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The temperature in these regions varies moderately due to <\/span><b>Oceanic influence.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In winters the temperature does not fall below 0\u00b0C.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summers the temperature varies in the range of <\/span><b>25\u00b0C to 27\u00b0C.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The absence of extreme temperature supports the growth of rich vegetation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The precipitation is very high in these regions, usually varying from <\/span><b>150-300 cm annually.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rainfall in these regions are well distributed throughout the year, thus there is no specific dry season.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winters are the wettest with prolonged rainfall and Summers are comparatively drier but the fog adds to the moisture requirement.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Temperate Rainforest Seasons<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperate Rainforests experience <\/span><b>two main seasons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than four distinct seasons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The winter season<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>long, cool, and very wet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, receiving maximum annual rainfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Summer season<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>short, cool, and relatively dry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but marked by frequent <\/span><b>fog formation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Temperate Rainforest Natural Vegetation<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperate Rainforests have a comparatively <\/span><b>simpler structure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than the tropical rainforests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have <\/span><b>two important layers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the <\/span><b>upper tree layer (canopy)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><b>few very tall trees rising above it<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>lower layers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are less<\/span><b> dense<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing <\/span><b>more sunlight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reach the ground.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of better light availability, the <\/span><b>floor of the forest supports rich plant growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mosses, ferns, lichens, and small plants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grow widely on the soil, rocks, and tree trunks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li sycamore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many trees are <\/span><b>deciduous<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, shedding leaves in winter, which further increases sunlight on the forest floor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the vegetation remains <\/span><b>green and healthy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to <\/span><b>high rainfall and mild temperatures<\/b><span rainforests have <\/span><b>fewer large mammals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as compared to tropical rainforests as the <\/span><b>vegetation is seasonal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and forest layers are simpler than the tropical rainforests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this, they support a winters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, wildlife in temperate rainforests is <\/span><b>well adapted to cool climate, high rainfall, and seasonal changes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Temperate Rainforests Climate Risks<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>rising global temperature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> poses a serious threat to the <\/span><b>mild and stable climate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the temperate rainforests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rapidly changing style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Temperate Rainforest is home to many rare and endemic plant and animal species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They act as an excellent source of carbon sink, thus reducing the impact of <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>climate change<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it supports a mild, cool and stable contribution in maintaining the ecological balance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Temperate Rainforests Declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Gondwana Rainforests of Australia<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the most extensive and rich areas containing many ancient vegetation from the historic Gondwana Supercontinent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Tasmanian Wilderness (Australia)<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This region has witnessed severe glaciation episodes and constitute one of the last expanses of temperate rainforests in the world. The remains of the limestone caves date back to more than 20,00 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Hyrcanian Wilderness (Iran\/Azerbaijan)<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This unique forest massif along the Caspian sea in Azerbaijan and Iran. The history of these forests dates back to as long as 25 to 50 million years, when they usually covered most of the Northern Temperate region.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Yakushima (Japan)<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in the interior of Yaku Island, at the meeting point of the Oriental biotic and the Palaearctic region, thus exhibiting a rich floral range.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Olympic National Park (USA)<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in the north-west of Washington State. It is known for its diverse ecosystems.
