


{"id":86043,"date":"2026-02-05T11:37:42","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T06:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=86043"},"modified":"2026-02-05T16:06:50","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T10:36:50","slug":"denotified-nomadic-and-semi-nomadic-tribes-dnts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/denotified-nomadic-and-semi-nomadic-tribes-dnts\/","title":{"rendered":"Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (DNTs)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (DNTs) Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denotified tribes, nomadic tribes, and semi-nomadic tribes across the country are coming together to push for a \u201cseparate column\u201d for themselves in the 2027 Census.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (DNTs)<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denotified Tribes (DNTs) are those <\/span><b>communities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which were <\/span><b>once notified under the Criminal Tribes Acts,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enforced by the <\/span><b>British Raj between l871 and I947.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a tribe becomes \u201cNotified\u201d as criminal, all its members were required to register with the local magistrates, failing which they would be charged with a \u2018crime\u2019 under the Indian Penal Code.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>After Independence,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this <\/span><b>Act was repealed in 1952,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>communities were \u201cdenotified\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hence the name.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>A few of these communities which<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were listed as denotified were also <\/span><b>nomadic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nomadic tribes are the communities who usually do not have land and move from one place to another for livelihood.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DNTs are among the <\/span><b>most neglected, marginalised, and economically deprived <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communities, with most living a life of destitution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Historically<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these communities <\/span><b>never had access to private land or home ownership <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and used forests and grazing lands for their livelihood and residential use.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Status of DNTs in India<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India, roughly <\/span><b>10 percent of the population<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are DNTs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment constituted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>National Commission for De-notified, Nomadic, and Semi-Nomadic Tribes (NCDNT) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the <\/span><b>chairmanship of Bhiku Ramji Idate <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for a period of three years-\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>to prepare a state-wise list of castes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">belonging to\u00a0 <\/span><b>DNTs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to suggest appropriate measures in respect of Denotified and Nomadic Tribes that may be undertaken by the Central Government or the State Government.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCDNT submitted its <\/span><b>report <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on 08.01.<\/span><b>2018<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>As per the report,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a total of <\/span><b>1235 communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been <\/span><b>identified as DNTs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the Commission\u2019s recommendations, the <\/span><b>ministry constituted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Development and Welfare Board for Denotified, Nomadic, and Semi-Nomadic Communities (DWBDNCs)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Board has been <\/span><b>mandated to formulate and implement welfare a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd development <\/span><b>programmes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for these communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
