It is famous for its discipline, bravery and fierce nature of warfare. The regiment usually consist of <\/span><b>soldiers of Gurkha (Nepali) origin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which uses its traditional weapon <\/span><b>Khukri<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who are Gorkhas?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gorkhas (or Gurkhas)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are people of <\/span><b>Nepali origin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who are named after <\/span><b>Guru Gorakhnath<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a revered warrior-saint and the historic hill region of <\/span><b>Gorkha in Nepal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the term is used to distinguish <\/span><b>Indian Gorkhas (Indian citizens)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><b>Nepali nationals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who live or work in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Indian Gorkhas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trace their roots to families that <\/span><b>settled in India during British rule<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially when Gorkha soldiers were recruited into the colonial army.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the <\/span><b>British annexation of Assam in 1826<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many Nepali-speaking soldiers moved into eastern and northeastern India, leading to permanent settlements.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, Gorkhas became an integral part of Indian society, known for their <\/span><b>military service, discipline, loyalty and hard work<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in both defence and civilian life.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Gorkha Regiment History<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The history of Gorkha Regiment can be traced back to the <\/span><b>Anglo-Nepal war (1814-1816) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and their continued contribution in the Indian Army post Independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Pre-Independence<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>After the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/anglo-nepal-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anglo-Nepal war<\/a> (1814-1816)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is also known as the <\/span><b>Gorkha War<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Britishers were so impressed by the fighting style and bravery of Gorkha soldiers that they started recruiting them in their army after signing the <\/span><b>Tretay of Sugauli (1816).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being then part of the British army, the Gorkah regiment created a strong reputation by participating in 1857 revolt, both Word wars and other colonial expeditions, fighting across Asia, Africa and South-east Asia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the colonial army, the Gorkha regiment was recognized as one the most effective and reliable infantry .<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Post-Independence<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Independenc, <\/span><b>the Tripartite Agreement was signed in 1947<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between <\/span><b>India, Nepal and the Britain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, under which out of 10 Gurkha regiments, <\/span><b>six regiments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were transferred to Indian Army, while the four regimentts went to the British Army.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 11th Gorkha Rifles was raised in 1948. At present, <\/span><b>the Indian army has seven Gorkha regiments.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gorkha regiment played a crucial role in many major battles like the <\/span><b>Kashmir war (1947-48), Indo-China war (1962), Indo-Pak war (1965, 1971) and the Kargil war (1999)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The regiment has contributed immensely in various operations like the counter-insurgency operations, border security, UN Peacekeeping missions and disaster relief.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Structure of the Gorkha Regiment<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" soldiers are mostly recruited from <\/span><b>Gorkha communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including Indian Gorkhas and Nepalese Gorkhas, according to government
