{"id":8625,"date":"2023-04-15T10:58:08","date_gmt":"2023-04-15T05:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=8625"},"modified":"2025-03-29T04:08:01","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T22:38:01","slug":"lower-arun-hydroelectric-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lower-arun-hydroelectric-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Lower Arun Hydroelectric Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Lower Arun Hydroelectric Project:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>679MW hydropower project.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>run-of-river<\/strong> project planned <strong>on Arun River<\/strong> (a tributary of the Koshi River), <strong>Nepal<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The project will be <strong>built under the build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) model.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The project is being <strong>developed by Investment Board Nepal and SJVN<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This is the <strong>second project awarded to SJVN in Nepal<\/strong>, the <strong>first one being<\/strong> the 900 MW <strong>Arun 3 Hydro Electric Project<\/strong> in Sankhuwasabha District.<\/li>\n<li>The project <strong>will not have any reservoir or dam<\/strong> and will be a tailrace development of the Arun-3 hydro project, which will mean water re-enters the river for the Lower Arun project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key facts about Arun-3 hydro project:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>900MW run-of-the-river<\/strong> hydropower project being developed on the <strong>Arun River in Sankhuwasabha District in Nepal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It will include the <strong>construction of a 70m-tall and 466m-long concrete gravity dam<\/strong> on the Arun River.<\/li>\n<li>It will be the <strong>biggest hydroelectric facility in Nepal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>SJVN Arun-III Power Development Company (SAPDC),<\/strong> a wholly-owned subsidiary of India\u2019s SJVN, <strong>is developing the project<\/strong> <strong>on<\/strong> a build-own-operate-transfer <strong>(BOOT) basis.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>SAPDC <strong>will operate the facility for a period of 25 years<\/strong>, excluding the construction period of five years, before transferring the ownership to the Nepal government.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is a gravity dam?<\/h3>\n<p>A gravity dam is a structure designed to withstand loads by its own weight and by its resistance to sliding and overturning on its foundation.
