They may also be known as <\/span><b>\u201ckissing bugs\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because they <\/span><b>tend to bite people\u2019s faces.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The parasite can also be<\/span><b> transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>childbirth, through contaminated food<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and beverages, <\/span><b>blood transfusions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, organ <\/span><b>transplants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or laboratory accidents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Once a person has the infection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they <\/span><b>remain infected for decades, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often with no signs or symptoms of illness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chagas disease is <\/span><b>common in South America, Central America, and Mexico<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the primary home of the triatomine bug.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Chagas Disease <\/b><b>Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Few people have symptoms at first<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But <\/span><b>over time, parasites <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><b>move to your tissues <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> cause chronic infections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leading to<\/span><b> heart and digestive tract damage.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Left untreated,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chagas disease later can cause <\/span><b>serious heart and digestive problems.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Chagas Disease <\/b><b>Prevention<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is<\/span><b> no vaccine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prevent Chagas disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Vector control,<\/b> <b>reducing interaction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between humans and vector insects, has been the most effective method of prevention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Blood screening<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is necessary to prevent infection through congenital transmission, transfusion, and organ transplantation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Chagas Disease <\/b><b>Treatment<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the <\/span><b>first phase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of infection, <\/span><b>treatment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Chagas disease <\/span><b>aims to kill the parasite.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Later<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s n<\/span><b>o longer possible to kill the parasite.
