R. Rao?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Rao, a prominent <strong>Indian-American mathematician and statistician<\/strong> was born to a Telugu family in <strong>Hadagali, Karnataka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He is currently a professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo.<\/li>\n<li>Rao has received many honours, like-<strong>Padma Bhushan (1968) and Padma Vibhushan (2001).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In his remarkable <strong>1945 paper<\/strong> published in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society, Rao demonstrated <strong>three fundamental results<\/strong> that paved the way for the modern field of statistics and provided statistical tools heavily used in science today.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>first<\/strong>, known as <strong>the Cramer-Rao lower bound,2<sup>nd<\/sup><\/strong>known as <strong>the Rao-Blackwell <\/strong>and the <strong>third result<\/strong> provided insights that pioneered a new interdisciplinary field that has flourished as <strong>\u201cinformation geometry.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Combined, these results help scientists more efficiently extract information from data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0Applications of his theories:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The Cramer-Rao lower bound is of great importance in such diverse fields as <strong>signal processing, spectroscopy, radar systems, <\/strong>multiple image radiography, risk analysis, and <strong>quantum physics.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The Rao-Blackwell process has been applied to stereology, particle filtering, and <strong>computational econometrics.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Information geometry has recently been used to aid the understanding and optimization of <strong>Higgs boson measurements at the Large Hadron Collider.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It has also found applications in recent research on <strong>radars and antennas<\/strong> and contributed significantly to advancements in artificial intelligence, <strong>data science, signal processing<\/strong>, shape classification and image segregation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>\u00a0Q1) What is the Abel Prize?<\/h3>\n<p>The Abel Prize is awarded annually to outstanding international mathematicians.
